Yes, I actually have heard of him. But then I read voraciously as a child.

Being a New Yorker with parents that encouraged my interest in history as a child, of course. Went to the battle site and learned all about him. As a 10 year old, I expected cannon and forts and all I got was a monument. I believe he also appears in the Henry Fonda/Claudette Colbert movie, "Drums Along the Mohawk." Which is a pretty good watch on a rainy weekend afternoon.

The French and Native American War 1755-1763, apparently.

Yes. I have.

Yup. As a native New Yorker, I learned all about him in school. Back when they taught history in schools.

And no, he wasn't a classmate.

I have heard of him also, and I am not a native New Yorker.

Native New Yorker, know who he is because of my own reading. I was in school during the 50's and 60's, wasn't taught about him in school.

Your link keeps freezing my computer. Tried it on a different computer and it froze.

Did you go to Catholic or Public School?

I went to St. Mary's (started school in 1956) where you learned. Like it or not.

And there is a Herkimer street in Brooklyn.

Old Contemptibles16 May 2016 8:02 a.m. PST

Got the link to work. Yes, of course I know who Nicholas Herkimer is. Anyone who has done Oriskany, will know him.

I can't imagine any serious student of the AWI not knowing about Herkimer. And I'm on the 'left coast' – where we do the things 'the right' way. : )

Virginia Tory17 May 2016 8:04 a.m. PST

Certainly heard of him…and while he was able to inspire the troops at Oriskany, not sure that falls into the "great leader" category.
