Thought I would post some pics of this refight of San Juan Hill that we staged a year ago from the ‘Span-Am War'. Whilst the Americans – full of reckless bravado – did eventually clear the heights, the Spaniards in this refight were a lot more stubborn and fought with much more resolve than they did in 1898. US casualties were frightful, suffering from extremely accurate Mauser fire. It proved a hollow victory as the entire division was wrecked. It is difficult to see how an effective investment of Santiago would have been possible after such loses. Even worse, Teddy Roosevelt lead his Rough Riders up that hill alright but became a casualty himself, dying form a Mauser bullet to the chest! Very nice indeed! (Note to self: must invest in some palm trees.) If you're interested in another opportunity to use your Spaniards in a rarely-gamed conflict – and I'm assuming they wore the same uniform – how about the 1896 battle of Binakayan-Dalhican in the Philippines: link This supposedly pitted 100,000 or so Filipino revolutionaries against 20,000 Spanish troops with naval support. It's big and bloody enough to be on my list for a BBB scenario some time … Chris Bloody Big BATTLES! link bloodybigbattles.blogspot.co.uk |

Hi ChrisBBB, Thanks for the tip-off for the conflict in the Philippines. I'll have to invest in some 15mm revolutionaries! |

Very good and unusual to see that conflict. The old Freikorps 15 do bear up well. |

Looks like great fun. In the real battle the Spanish rolled poorly. I've done a refight of Las Guasmas as well as a campaign based on Escario's column from Manzanillo using TSATF. |

Ostrowski, well done. Chris…really? Wow. Did not know about that battle. |

No Buffalo Soldiers huh? Probably just as well, no one seems to give them credit anyway. |

Schlesien: wow, indeed. This has been part of the fun of the BBB project – discovering (and wargaming) many huge but relatively unknown battles. Chris Bloody Big BATTLES! link bloodybigbattles.blogspot.co.uk |

Regarding the Buffalo Soldiers – the 9th and 10th US Cavalry regiments are represented in the game. You might be able to just spot them in the second photo down on the left hand side. They did a great job. |

Wait, those are FreiKorps figures? They don't look like the poses I see on their website, and DAMN they look good here! Okay, those are mostly Fantassin, now Capitan, figures, by the poses. Still, looking great!!! Care to join and post piccies to the SAW Yahoo group? link |
