Why did they go from plastic to resin? Is resin harder to work with? Is it a softer type plastic? Im more than a little confused here and may be disappointed with the Rus. |

I think they did a kickstarter for the plastics which failed to raise the required sum.I have seen resin models being built and they seem to require more preparation and usually need some filling and pinning. Resin is a hard substance, I think you have to use Epoxy glue? |

I used super glue on 1 batch and epoxy on the 2d. So far, no problems with either. |

If they could not guarantee a market to justify the cost of the plastic molds, resin seems to be the top choice over metals for some manufacturers. |

And so FF loses many of it's loyal fans. I don't like resin. I bought one of their resin four packs and will never buy another. |

Is there another source for Rus plastics in 28mm or maybe someone makes teardrop shields to 'kit bust' a 7-8 point Nevsky retinue |
Sloppypainter | 13 May 2016 11:54 a.m. PST |
tigrifsgt, what was wrong with them? I am thinking about getting some of their Sudanese spearmen. |
BelgianRay | 13 May 2016 12:05 p.m. PST |
There is nothing wrong with them, as with plastics, the future wargamer should get used to inovation. The same negativity over plastics when they came out is probably forgotten ? Metal is definetly on his way out and hard plastics is very very expensive and requires a huge turnover. |

BelgianRay disagreed with me in another thread on this same subject. He is entitled to his opinion. That's what this is all about. I felt they were very brittle and small and thin pieces broke off way too easily. I was sad to see FF go this way. I have all of their plastic boxes but one. I wish them luck with their resin only approach, but they have lost my business. |

That's really a shame I was really reallllllly waiting for the Nevsky Rus. I will find a way, maybe foot sear gents with teardrop and booted eastern horse. Guess I will go metal since thank god, it's Saga and not mega figure wall to wall rank on rank war mamma. Lion rampant works too. |
Cerdic | 14 May 2016 10:31 a.m. PST |
I don't think they have abandoned plastic and gone 'resin only'? As far as I know they still reduce their plastic sets. Their latest releases are in resin presumably because the subjects won't generate the volume of sales that plastic needs. |
tigrifsgt | 14 May 2016 11:45 a.m. PST |
Okay FF, I know that you guys watch these threads. Will we ever see a NEW plastic box any time soon from you guys? |
BelgianRay | 14 May 2016 2:46 p.m. PST |
Yes tigfifsgt, when what Cerdic states is an issue, and when the generated expected volume of sales is not sufficient to be profitable (= commercially feasable), the choise will be resin. In all other cases, my guess is, it will be hard plastics. For ex : Zulu's, phalanxes and Napoleonics and the like. And I hope Fireforge will make plastic Saracens and Hospitallers, (serious lack in they'r Crusader range) because I too prefer plastics. But look at it this way : Command figures and special figures as well as everything that is not going to be sold in big quantities, will be resin instead of lead. Exactly what Games Workshop has been doing for quite some time now. I'm not a fan but they seem to know (commercally), what they are doing. Check Gripping Beast who are putting up a risky balloon with their late Romans in plastic.Allthough they have probably the biggest range of lead in that area. Please note that it comes down to be commercially viable and the quality of the product. Therefore Fireforge took the (for me, and I appreciate your opinion)best solution. Whatever used to be made in lead goes to resin and whatever can be made for broad sales will be in plastics. Same as the Games Workshop filosophy on this matter. Please also note that the stance of figures in resin is a lot more versatile than in pewter and the same goes for more crisp detail. I am sorry to read that small pieces and thin pieces broke off too easily, since it has not happened to me yet, and I have all of them. But even if that happened it would be easier to fix them with superglue than pewter. I am not trying to convert you to resin but trying to give you an idea of what companies like Fireforge have to take in account nowadays to give you prime figures and be viable(and I'm sure you will concur on theyr quality in general). If you do not agree with the above let us at least agree to disagree. I am also sorry for my sometimes "funny" English. |
tigrifsgt | 14 May 2016 4:18 p.m. PST |
I don't disagree that FF is doing what is best for them. Personally I really don't have any use for the specialty figures, I deal mostly in larger armies and make my command stands from the figures supplied in the boxes. I have already said that I wish them luck. I needed more than a few archers and I'm going to use the Perry 1415-1429 English set with the numerous heads and arms I have from all of my FF left over bits. I have the GB foot arabs and will buy the mounted in the near future. I didn't like the Conquest archers for my needs. I hope that gives you an idea as to my opinions. And as far as your English. I am an American and have trouble following my English relatives from Manchester, and my Ukranian from the other side of the family is really awful. TIG |
BelgianRay | 15 May 2016 2:42 p.m. PST |
I also have the foot and the GB cavalry. I "got" your opinion and understand you completely now. If you can make your "special" figures yourself I really understand it. As I said before : I also prefer hard plastics above anything else (consider only the weight of transporting the army). I go for "special" figures first in resin and then pewter, but prefer by far hard plastics above anything else. Glad whe sorted it out because I do not like to argue insensibly. I was only trying to explain the problems a company like FF has to deal with to be viable and (let's hope it) continue to exist. |
