Which ruleset(s) do you prefer for your games involving 'mechs? |
D6 Junkie | 12 May 2016 5:02 p.m. PST |
Alpha Strike because I can easily play with 12-36 mechs per side. |

Ditto on the Alpha Strike. And also because all of the old mechs, including the now re-seen ones, are statted out already ^,^ |

Battletech. Warts and all. |

Classic 1984 Battletech. I got the game when it was called Battledroids. |
53Punisher | 12 May 2016 6:46 p.m. PST |
Old school Battletech (and not beyond the 3050 era). |
Lyran Intelligence Corps | 12 May 2016 7:09 p.m. PST |
Alpha Strike, large force sizes as it was meant to be and without spending the whole weekend to get three turns played! |
Dynaman8789 | 12 May 2016 7:29 p.m. PST |
Second edition Battletech (the one just after the Battledroids release) and classic stuff only – no clans. They ruined the game with the clans stuff. If trying for anime style I use the Mekton Z rules. |

I like the original Battletech, but I'm willing to try other rules that speed up play. |

home modified MechWarrior clix (base mechanics, change in turn sequence) |

None at the moment, but I'll be playing my first Alpha Strike game in a fortnight…. I've loved the Battletech "universe" since my teens, but while the idea behind the rules appealed to me, I just found it too slow. Clicky MechWarrior came along at a very good time for me, though – I was pretty much a non-gamer due to irregular shift patterns, lack of time, and a lack of a local gaming group that I fit in with (the only one local to me were lovely blokes, but the club almost exclusively played competitive DBM, which isn't my thing) and the Clix stuff meant I could find pick-up games easily and didn't need to paint anything, so it saw me through a gaming dry spell of several years until it burned out. Since then I've not really played any Mech games, but the recent buzz about Alpha Strike has seen me dig out a big box of clicky Mechs and print out the quick start rules, so my oppo and I will be giving them an outing in a couple of weeks. I rather hope we like them, although I'm going to have a *lot* of rebasing to do if we do…. ;-) |

Mech Attack from Armor Grid Games for small sized games. 5150: No Quarter from Two Hour Wargames. |

Also Mech Attack for pseudo-Battletech stuff (but I'm curious about Alpha Strike, so I may pick it up when I get a chance). For other settings, Samurai Robots Battle Royale from Ganesha Games. |

If anyone wants to try out the Alpha Strike Rules there is a free PDF with quick starter rules, mech counters and cards. link |

My group has been playing classic Battletech as well. We were tempted by Alpha Strike, gave it a good read and had a playtest but in the end it didn't really feel like Battletech. We have a few house rules that speed up play but avoiding the arms race of adding later tech and clan stuff is what really makes the games faster. Most of our games are 4 mechs on 4 mechs and last between 1 and 2 hours. The last big game we had was company on company on a 8'X 4' table and took around 5 hours. link Here are a couple of pics from last year, about half of the terrain is being used. |
