I know the uniform, but I have multiple sources in my library and in regards to their coat color I have two basic colors referenced. A blue gray and a light blue. I am just curious which is correct. The plates always seem to show a light blue, but wonder sill which might be correct or at least others thoughts on the subject..

Thanks,

Terry

They both could be right, mate, depending upon a number of factors like fading, mordant used in the dye and wear and tear.

Personally I'd chose the colour you either think is right or just prefer, and use that. If anyone questions your choice you can either show them the references or ask them to prove it's wrong. When (alright, if) I ever get around to doing some I'll probably use a colour similar to Humbrol 96 "RAF Blue" and add some white to taste.

Thanks all! Dal, I think you have it right, but was interested to know how others felt. I'll probably lean toward a strong blueish gray.

To me the Bemerode painting is the closest we'll get to a "snapshot" of the period

This blue-grey more or less tallies with the Gmundner Prachtwerk as reproduced on the Kronoskaf site.

Terry37,

As said before, your preference of colour is very individual. In the end It's you that makes the decision, based on your personal taste – or your individual eye-ball calibration, to put it in other words.
You are the artist. I am a graduate of an art school and have studied the subject somewhat more in-deapth then most other wargamers I would believe.
Here is my best advice approach to the subject:
An original uniform is not existing anymore, hence, no 100% dead on reference for the true colour. Just illustrations. Watercolour source should be more reliable here then oils, as the latter darken with the time. But then, if you are not looking at an original, but rather at a print reproduction, you still may be fooled. The reproduction may be lousy (Mollo's long out of print 7YW Armies book is notorious here)
The German term for the coat dye colour of Hanoverian gunners is "Steel Grey" rather then the light blue, often seen in illustarations.
Now you have to make a fit with other light blues you have in your Minden armies, such as the Prussian dragoons, or possibly the French inf. regt. Royal-Deux-Ponts, found with "sky blue" coats from 1760 on.

I'd make it about as light as that of Prussian dragoons, but with a distinctive greyer off blue shade. It should be a very light tone. This would fit this periods rococo style very much, with its devotion light toner shades of colours. The French Royal-Deux-Ponts "Sky Blue" should be somewhat brighter and more intensive than that of the Prussian dragoons and Hannoverian gunners,
That'll be the way I would do it today, if I hadn't painted all of these units decades ago.

Cheers,
Christian

Thanks Musketier, a really good picture reference and it does seem to be a gray shade there more than a blue.

Thanks again Christian. Very good advise, and I will be going with a gray with a slight touch of blue but not too dark or bright.

Thanks all!

Terry
