Having gone through all my cubby holes I have now brought all of my collection out in to the light of day, so to speak. They got a good proper sort, and have been put away in to their boxes. I make labels and print them on sticker sheets, putting one on the long side and one on the short end. Each genre/period has a unique color/font combination so they are easy to tell apart. Even easier now that they are actually sorted and not just put wherever there is space. I use two sizes of boxes. The large is 12x18 and comes in a variety of depths (I use 2,3 and 4"). The small boxes are 9x12 and 2" deep. I was behind in keeping up with labeling them. Some things, mostly buildings and some terrain, are just loose. Likewise my LoTR Mumakil just floats around in a file box. I have three shelving units to store all the boxes (unfortunately, some have to hide in the corner). Here is the first, with 15mm Napoleonics on the top shelf. Underneath are ACW, Flames of War, Old West, and others.
Here we have SciFi (15mm and 6mm), loads of terrain/scenics, MicroArmor, Vikings & Saxons, and others.
Lastly the loose terrain, buildings and some odds and ends that don't have better homes:

Impressive! Is it me or is the top shelf in the first photo sagging slightly? |

@John Armatys- only you can know if you are sagging slightly; the shelf certainly is. |

Yup, there is a little sag there. I may need to add one more shelf… |

Mark, It would be great once you are finished to head down here to NC and do the same for my "rats nest"! :-) Just curious, how long did all this take you, from start to finish? I come into mine, look around and say…not today, or no way. I know my physical limitations are an issue, but not really an excuse. anyway, great job! Sam |

I just sorted my gaming closet out the other day, using a trove of keyboard boxes acquired when my school redid a computer lab this semester. Still a mess though! |

First: How are you going to find anything in there now? I mean, it's all 'organized' and stuff. You won't know which project you worked on last (the one on top, in my case). You won't be surprised when you dig to the bottom of the pile and 'find' those 'missing' minis. How sad. Second: Now that it is organized, you won't want to take anything out and play with it. I guess you can send your soon to be unloved lead to me. I'll get my address to you. Third: That is a seriously impressive accomplishment. Good on ya'. |

@Sam: Not sure you can afford me. My wife gets a big discount cuz she sleeps with me. All told it took about 2 days. To be honest, having moved a few times in the past couple years, things were half way organized anyway. Mostly boxes were just not labeled / mis-labeled / poorly labeled. - First step – 1/2 day – was to pull out and sort all the unpainted. Box and label.
- Second: 2 Hours. Select unpainted for the sale/giveaway table. A lot of this was acquired as part of a collection where I only wanted the painted stuff anyway. Some is just excess – I need 3 but they come in packs of 6 (hot dogs and buns). So I'll sell/trade/donate that.
- Third: 1/2 day – pull all the painted out and put into sorted stacks. Check each box to make sure there's no mixed periods, hidden unpainted etc.
- Fourth – 1/2 day – put back on shelves, make, print and affix labels.

What kind of boxes, and where did you get them? |

I buy them from U-Line (but they only sell them in bundles of 25): link I used to sell them singly and magnet lined, but they are now oversized so shipping got crazy expensive ($10 to ship an empty $5 USD box). |

Thanks, Mark! It is doubtful that I could afford you! :-) Appreciate the steps info, time table and how to. I figure with my physical limitations, and a much smaller collection I can get it done in about a week. My main issue is sorting and storing the non gaming stuff that seems to keep growing. That's definitely gonna take "advice and consent" from the missus! thanks for the much needed motivation and encouragement that it "can be done"! as always thanks! Sam |
