Does anyone know of some good orc shields, that come in a pack on their own? They don't have to specifically be for orcs; they can be pretty much anything, as long as they are not heater-shaped or kite-shaped shields. Oh, and they need to cheap and in bulk packs; I have a lot of orc spearmen to get ready. |

If desperate you could fall back on the traditional pack of drawing pins… |

Gripping Beast packs of round dark age shields would work and are quite cheap. |

Take a look at Sgt Major's shields Http://www.sgmm.biz/Shields_c_62.html I've never bought them myself, but I've always kept them in mind due to their variety and cost. Also, some of the wargames factory figures had some interesting shields if you can track them down. |

Gripping Beast seems to be a good choice, with lots of selection! Since we're on the topic, what kind of shields do you all think that orcs would carry? I'm not too keen on the driftwood-type shields myself, but would there be some other type that might suite them better? |

Thanks, Gentlemen… I think. I checked out the link to SGGM's web site, and I discovered that I absolutely *needed* to order four of their Persian(?) Bolt Thrower models to augment my Hobgoblin Army with (painted as orange-skinned, blue nosed humanoids, they will make perfect Hobgoblins), as well as a pack of 10 Large Wicker Shields, to arm my Hill Giant army with (54mm Cave Men figures, which are in proper size for 25mm tall Humans, as per the 1977 AD&D Monster Manual's sizes given). The 'Hill Giant' figures have a large number of castings with their left arm extended in a perfect position to glue on a large shield. I had one large shield, in my bit box, which I equipped a figure with, and I really like how it turned out. Now I can equip a bunch of others with similar, wicker shields, to really add some more variety to the figures. I see Hill Giants as being a very low tech race, so the wicker shields will make a good fit. These will be loads of fun to employ. Cheers! |

Here is another idea for inexpensive (read, dirt cheap!), Orc shields: Use popsicle sticks: 1) drag a blade screwdriver over the flat surface, to score it randomly; 2) cut it into properly sized pieces, with oddly angled cuts, maybe make them rough, or even splintered along the top/bottom edges; 3) 'paint' them with Minwax Polyshades Urethane Stain Satin Finish, using either Royal Walnut (dark, muddy brown color), or perhaps even Tudor (black); 4) if you prefer, matte coat them to dull the shine, then glue them in place. You can add horizontal lines, small point-dents, to simulate nails, or whatever else strikes your fancy. After they are stain-varnished, these textures will show up nicely. Cheers! |
