A friend found his father's old World War II or Korean era uniform and had a question about it. The uniform was a parade dress uniform and had the patch of the First Infantry Division on it. He was an E3 based on rank. The confusion came from the shoulder loops. The loops were green rather than the light blue associated with the infantry. What was the green loop for. Excellence or campaign or ? |

Isn't the Belgian (forget the name) cord Green? |
Rakkasan | 10 May 2016 11:06 a.m. PST |
If there is one rope like thing then I think you referring to items called cords, lanyards, or aiguillettes depending on the type. The Belgian fourragere is green and yellow or gold. The different branches of the Army have cords done up in their regimental or branch color (Infantry is Blue, Army is Yellow, etc…) Today, the Military Police have a green cord. |

Are they braided, with gold-tipped tassels, worn over the left shoulder? That's the French Fourragere, a unit award provided by the French government to several US units for service during WWI. We wore them in the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Red One received one as well. EDIT: Sorry, maybe not. Based on Rakkasan's post, looks like the Army does stuff different than the Marines with these. V/R, Jack |

It is the French Fourragere, awarded to the 1st ID for WW2. link |

A green shoulder loop was mentioned, not a cord. Do you mean this? link |

If KeithRK has it right, troops at Ft. Benning wore "infanty blue" LII. I'm not sure they were authorized for wear anyplace else. I know I wore green ones when I was with 1st ID. |

Thanks for the responses. I will ask if he was an MP. A unit cord award is possible. It looks like a braided cord like the blue one my troops wore who had earned the Combat infantry badge. |

I was in an artillery unit that support the Marines (and was awarded) in the Korean War. As I remember we got a green cord that we could wear as long as we were in the unit. |

KeithRK points to leadership tabs. A PFC would usually not have these |
Rudysnelson | 10 May 2016 3:39 p.m. PST |
True they are not leadership tabs. It was hard to even get permission for me to give tabs to Spec 4. They always wanted Corporals but that was hard when you needed a scout commander. |
donlowry | 11 May 2016 9:51 a.m. PST |
Wouldn't an E3 have been a Corporal? |
Sundance | 12 May 2016 9:58 a.m. PST |
donlowry, no, E4s are Corporals in combat arms or specialists in other MOSs. |
Rudysnelson | 12 May 2016 5:45 p.m. PST |
In WW2 Specialists were called technical. So you would have a TechSgt or Tech5 which was the same as a Spec5 and s commsnd5 called a SGT. You also had Tech4. |

not talking about now, but in WW2: Private Private 1st Class Corporal Sergeant Staff Sergeant Tech Sergeant Master Sergeant |

IIRC in 1st ID we wore the Belgian fourragère (3rd ID was the French fourragère). Are there any other unit insignia on the uniform? |
