An 1811 Journal of a British Royal Engineer officer has been found in a Tasmanian book store: "A handwritten journal found buried in an Australian bookshop is believed to be a prominent soldier's diary from the Napoleonic wars, writes Paul Carter. "Sophisticated and possessing a talent for writing, he served in theatres of war around the world and was prominent enough to be mentioned in diplomatic dispatches…" For full article see: link |

And this is a very important first hand source since it describes the second siege of the fortress of Badajoz. I hope it gets published soon. Jim |

G'Day Being in Tasmania, I took the opportunity to look the journal over last week. The bookshop owners had already received multiple offers to transcribe the contents.

Mark Thompson's very good book on the subject mentions John Squire throughout in his book Wellington's Engineers: Military Engineering in the Peninsular War 1808-1814. I bet that Thompson is already contemplating a revised edition, or even a Biography of the man if he can get the rights. Paul :) |
