Wanted to let folks know of a new blog documenting my 1/600 US Civil War on the waters project. link
Big thanks to TMP posters the G Dog and Julian for inspiring me to get some of my miniature ship work online to share. Featured in the first post are pictures of my Bay Area Yards model of the Queen of the West and a single heavy gun battery from Thoroughbred Miniatures. OBW |

Love the crew figures. Are they supplied individually or do you have to trim them from bases? |

Sweet! I am linking to it from my blog! I wish you well on your blog. |

Crew figures? Wow…way to raise the bar! That is some lovely work you are doing. Really first rate. I'm loving the way the figures help scale the true size of the ship models and gun batteries. The gray paint scheme really works well too. I'm looking forward to you next post! |

Crew figures?!?! And I'm struggling to get rigging on my ships and now someone adds crew figures. I give up, there is no way I can even come close to the quality of The G Dog and OldBlackWater. These Rembrandts and di Vinci s make anything I try look like a kindergartener's school project. |

+1 Private Matter. However, I would like to know where the crew figures came from. |

3mm ACW figures? Was at little wars and saw modern and WW2 3mm vehicles and aircraft. Didn't look any deeper as I am into 6mm (1/300) scale in those areas. |

I agree the crew figures are a really nice touch. They really bring the pieces to life. I can't wait to see one of your corvettes, sloops or frigates. :-) - Ix |

Howdy folks, Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement smilin' on me. The crew figures are from Oddzial Osmy (O8) which I think is a Polish company. They have a 3mm ACW line which scales really well with the 1/600 vessels. They are sculpted to represent land units but at this scale they work ok for crew. With that said, it would be wonderful if O8 ever decided to make a strip or two of ACW sailors-I would buy a bunch. The artillery crew is a strip of 5 individuals, in a bag of 15 strips. I snap the individuals off of the base/strip, they don't snip well as they're made from a pretty hard alloy. I buy them here in the US from PicoArmor. picoarmor.com Private matter, don't despair! Every day I look at TMP I see paint jobs that blow me away. I grew up around fine ship models, the kind built frame by miniature frame, plank by plank. When I compare my work to these glass encased beauties, my tiny steamers appear quite crude-fine art? no… more like folk art. But I do it to please myself, it isn't a competition… more a continuum. Yellow Admiral, it just so happens that I have a Peter Pig model of the steam sloop Hartford in progress on the ways. The Peter Pig ACW models have the gun crews cast to the guns and are modeled much skinnier than the O8 artillery crew. So I don't mix the two because I don't like the look, leaving the Peter Pig models to be crewed only by the cast on gun crews. Next blog post I intend to introduce the CSS Arkansas, adversary to the Queen of the West. OBW |

Very nice work OBW. Like the crew members, definitely adds something to the miniature. |

LOL! Clearly you've not seen my earlier work.I'll dig out some of the older stuff that's clearly not my best effort. But it's important as that how I built my skills. Trial, error and practice. And repainting, yeah that's the ticket! My very first 1/600 model was CSS Manassas from Thoroughbred Models. You know what color it was painted? Black! No grey washes, no rust, just black. I have a Thoroughbred model of the Hartford that I've owned for many years. It gets used a lot. It has NO RIGGING. And it's just fine for a tabletop gaming model. Stick with it, and if you don't like how something turned out, think about what you don't like, think about how to change it and try again. Your Eastern North Carolina project sounds interesting. I'm waiting to hear how it turns out. Heck, I may do a convention game on that theme using a bunch of gunboats and some shore batteries. …and let me add that there are many folks on this site who are much better painters than I am. ACW Bill and Dances with Clydesdales both do amazing work painting their ACW models. |
