Johnp4000 | 14 May 2016 2:38 a.m. PST |
I am surprised no one has mentioned that, the cheekguard looks over scaled around the rim.The rest of the casting looks excellent. |
Trajanus | 16 May 2016 2:20 p.m. PST |
Funnily they don't look as large on the actual figures as the they do on the shots of indvidual heads. |
STEVE LBMS | 17 May 2016 1:53 a.m. PST |
Just a wild guess but maybe it is because the shots of the heads are about 15 times bigger than the actual heads will be in reality. |

This range of ancients has rapidly improved in quality and versatility which is wonderful to see for someone who first picked up Airfix figures nearly half a century ago. But no matter how clear the instructions youngsters will struggle with the shield transfers for these and maybe 50 years from now they will still be struggling with the transfers. Perhaps an embossed shield design would be better for a box that might at some point be bought off the toy shop/model shop shelf. Old wargaming hands wont bulk at having to buy a pack of plain shields along with transfers sets to customize their legions. |
STEVE LBMS | 17 May 2016 4:55 a.m. PST |
I don't profess to speak for others about how difficult or easy they find my transfers. Some people don't get on with them I understand, but thousands of customers I have do (including children)If everybody found them so difficult would I be in business 12 years later with thousands of design sheets? Sculpted shields are popular for some and not for others. Most people want the ability to apply various designs to their shields. The demographic for the figures as we found out over the years is not the casual child buying off the toy shop shelf. That does not exist anymore. They are war-gamers and a few modellers. Steve. |
Suetonius Paullinus | 17 May 2016 6:44 a.m. PST |
One thing is certain.. Steve's shield designs make even a poorly painted figure look class 8-) Cheers SP |
Tarantella | 17 May 2016 7:22 a.m. PST |
Quite so and for every other box that is produced it would neither be economical nor historical to put embossed shields on the main sprue but this is the most iconic wargaming figure of the most iconic army of the ancient world that any company might produce whether it's spotted in a shop or on a website or on the wargames table. |
Trajanus | 17 May 2016 8:33 a.m. PST |
Personally, I would see embossed shields as a major step backwards. Never easy to paint and I can't recall any I ever saw that looked remotely as good as transfers. Also I wouldn't want to pay for something else in a box I wasn't going to use along with all those spare heads, arms etc. |
HANS GRUBER | 17 May 2016 8:45 a.m. PST |
Personally, I would see embossed shields as a major step backwards. Never easy to paint and I can't recall any I ever saw that looked remotely as good as transfers. Suetonius was referring to Little Big Men transfers, not embosed shields. |
Trajanus | 17 May 2016 2:57 p.m. PST |
I know he was, l was referring to Tarentella's posts not his! |

LBMS transfers go very well with Victrix but there maybe a place for embossed Macedonian/Successor shields when Victrix phalangites are released. Ideal for Bronze and Silver shields. Works in metal. Just thinking aloud – any chance Victrix could make spare packs of shields only? |
STEVE LBMS | 18 May 2016 1:47 a.m. PST |
We have talked about shield and weapon and head packs but need to dig down and work out the costs of manufacture and production versus how many will actually be sold to justify the cost. You can get metal embossed shields from other companies so people could just use those, they don't cost much. Steve. |
Mars Ultor | 18 May 2016 9:52 a.m. PST |
The battle line above looks very dynamic, like they're in the thick of the fighting. Mirabile visu! as the Romans would say. Steve, if you're still there, any guess as to how many in a box? |
Mithridates | 18 May 2016 3:31 p.m. PST |
Thanks Steve – have used embossed shields from both Crusader and Relic. Quite light so would be fine with plastic. Just thought I would ask. Just got the unarmoured Spanish – double quick time and excellent figures. Garry |
Tarantella | 19 May 2016 7:00 a.m. PST |
In opposition to the idea of relying on other companies and of gluing metal shields onto plastic figures (hence the previous reference to the longevity of Airfix figures) two sprues each of 24 plain legionary shields and 4 packets of LBMS transfers would fit very nicely into the large letter format for posting. |
STEVE LBMS | 19 May 2016 7:33 a.m. PST |
Embossed shields in the set are not happening. we are looking at 24 figures in answer to an earlier question. Steve. |
