Great looking gunboat, and using the Filipinos as South/Central Americans is a good idea as well.

You might find some kind of 15mm-ish Junk on ebay or Amazon. There also might also be something at Hobby Lobby, Pier 1 Imports,etc.

Old Glory 25's Shipyard has a generic 15mm Junk that may work for you ( link ) . I have seen a wooden model of a junk as well that should work, but I cannot remember the name of the company ( they also do a lot of the wooden buildings ) . The San Pebbles looks great. Good luck with the project.

I may lean towards Central America as the main focus even though helmeted Marines and sailors are probably incorrect. I cannot find Chinese buildings in 15mm while some of mt Vietnam buildings would I think work well in central America. It's like I am halfway satisfied for both arenas, missing something for each. Of course I could just make something up for central America and use the helmeted figs as I see fit!

Thanks for the heads up about junks, Rogues1…looks like they have a few to choose from plus some launches.

I have a Houston 25mm San Pablo. I use 3rd Edition Boilers and Breechloaders rules. I did the Sand Pebbles movie (1966) battle to lift the boom on the River Chien with Pulp Figures U.S. Navy minis. The black gang guy with the rolled up sleeves and BAR is my Jake Holman. I scratchbuilt the Junks and the boom.

For my Battle of Weizhao Dao (70 clicks off Guanxi Province in Gulf of Hainan), set in the 20's, the warlord who banned opium trade (and was killed a year later) sent his war Junk (scratch built with 6" gun) out to the island to intercept a German freighter (30" long, scratch built) loaded with opium and missionaries (they were hedging their bets) to test the mettle of the warlord in an attempt to re-open the opium trade. The missionaries were sent in on the same ship to muddy the waters and confuse the Chinese on the mission of SS Venture (yep, the tramp from the Kong movie). Moving through the harbor at the same time were tugs pushing barges loaded with German Colonial troops, and Her Majesty's Rifles (Pulp Figures) who enjoyed sticking their noses into everyone's business. A Brit Coastal Motor Boat (Brigade Games), entered the harbor at high speed, looking for any opportunity to launch a 14" torpedo off the back of the boat. The Germans leased an interned U-Boat (from Brigade Games) from the Dutch with old, iffy torpedoes. It's periscope (scratch built) cut through the waters of the harbor as the War Junk entered. Chinese militia troops (Pulp Figures and borrowed) on the island sortied in sampans (scratch built) pulled along by a steam launch (scratch built), also headed to the SS Venture, anchored in the harbor. As a trawler (cut down to the waterline from Hobby Lobby) of Bolsheviks's hove into view with tacit approval of the warlord to intervene should hostilities break out, the USS San Pablo (thanks, Richard Houston) simultaneously entered the other side of the harbor with some stringent rules of engagement, having heard some of the beleaguered missionaries might be U.S. Citizens. Actually, all of them were from Alabama. A Chinese Lighter (scratch built) also chugged up with gun crews manning rotary 37mm cannon. During the night the Chinese emplaced onto the large harbor buoy (find it at Hobby Lobby), yet another rotary 37mm gun. The astute warlord also had planted a string of command detonated mines (cards in Boilers and Breechloaders) across the approach of the tugs carrying European troops toward the freighter. The electrical board was located on a small island in the harbor, backed up with a field gun and a water jacketed machine gun and crews. The crazed Chinese naval commander also ordered a line of contact mines spread in the night that are now drifting in on the harbor interior with the tide.
The Bolsheviks touched off this powder keg of drama by firing on the San Pablo.

All pandemonium then broke out with everyone firing on everyone. BTW during the fight the U-Boat launched torpedoes, one of which jerked 45 degrees and detonated on the stern of the German flagged freighter.

I would call that my favorite Sand Pebbles game.
