Hello I went to Cold Wars in 2015 and had a great time. I'm intending to return in 2017 (and also visit some of the ACW battlefields that I missed last time). I understand from the HMGS East website and TMP that The Host has been sold, but the new owner will honour the existing bookings. It appears that Cold Wars 2017 will be on 16 – 19 March. Before I go and book flights and a hotel (not The Host), is anyone able to confirm that Cold Wars will definitely be on those dates at The Host or indicate if there is any doubt in the matter. I understand that we are still 11 months away and things might change, but I just want to have confidence to make the bookings. Thank you |

Here is a link to the HMGS, Inc. website. On the linked page are three updates concerning the situation with the cons and The Host. hmgs.site-ym.com Please note that while I am a dues paying member of the organization, I do not hold any official position so I am only passing on publically released information. One or more of the linked updates states that there is a time window where a financial penalty kicks in if the contract(s) are canceled. That is no guarantee that there will not be a change but may be an incentive for the parties to work through any difficulties related to the change in ownership. Unrelated to that info, there has been recent news releases that there will be a new hotel or two built in the vicinity of The Host. |

By the way… Glad to hear you enjoyed the con and the trip in general. Nice to hear that you plan to come back. Last weekend was sunny and warm so I gathered up my 14 year old son and one of his school classmates and drove to the Gettysburg Battlefield. I live about 1-1/2 hour's drive from Gettysburg so I get there a couple of times a year. I hope you get lucky with nice weather on your visit and get to see more of the sites you are interested in. |

AussieAndy, pleased to have you here in the States, hurry back. Ditto on the glad you enjoyed yourself. Which games did you play in? How does Cold Wars compare to Aussie game cons? |
AussieAndy | 04 May 2016 2:34 a.m. PST |
Thank you. Capncarp, I played in a Shako 2 game, a Blucher game, an 1870 game (with Bruce Weigle) and a couple of other games. Our one day Melbourne Con, Little Wars, is on later this month. You could fit the whole thing into the dealer hall at Cold Wars twice over. Melbourne has about 4 million people, but I guess that you probably have at least 100 million within driving distance of Lancaster. There is a bigger Con in Canberra, but I haven't been to that yet. Zoneofcontrol, I hope that I get better weather than last year, as the great snow storm of 2015 made for challenging driving for an Australian. I spent a few days in Gettysburg last year and enjoyed it very much. Regards |

AussieAndy: If you started to drive now, you'd make it in plenty of time, with light traffic and good seas. ;D At least now you can say you got to drive in an appreciable amount of snow. (The secret? Drive less than the posted speed limit, be patient, and be super-courteous to fellow drivers. And have eyes out of every orifice of your body to warn you of those that don't adhere to the "secret".) |

They said that Cold Wars 2017 was going to be at the host but after that I suspect all conventions will be in Fredericksburg. |

AussieAndy- Have you given any thought to visiting Historicon instead of Cold Wars? Historicon is an extremely similar and possibly slightly larger con compared to Cold Wars. Cold Wars is held in the later part of winter here in the US. I throw a snow shovel in the car each time I go and I have used it more than once. On the other hand, Historicon is held in the middle of our summer. (Much less chance of snow – LOL!) It is also held in Fredericksburg, VA which is a great hub for traveling to many east coast ACW sites. I have been to both of these cons and like them very much. I'm not sure what your work and personal life is like so I don't know if such a switch from one show to the other would work. All the best to you whichever you decide on… |

I saw you briefly in the dining room of The Host the last time you were here. I hope to see you again. I'm glad you are planning to return. Tom |

Ottoathome, We can only hope so! That would be great! |

Thank you all. I remember meeting you Tom. Thanks for the suggestion about Historicon zoneofcontrol, but I ruled that out because I just don't handle high humidity. I'd also rather avoid the summer crowds. I spent a few days at Fredericksburg last time and went to the Wilderness, Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania. I did consider Fall In, but it clashes with the Melbourne spring racing carnival (and I live 15 minutes walk from the turnstiles at Flemington Racecourse). Regards |

Ottoathome, I hope they don't. I really wasn't impressed with it. |

AussieAndy- "I spent a few days at Fredericksburg last time and went to the Wilderness, Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania." My Great-Grandfather was a Union Soldier with the local regiment, the 93rd PA Volunteers. At the age of 16, he got his parents to sign papers so he could enlist after Gettysburg. He was wounded during the Battles of the Wilderness. He was wounded two other times and served for the duration of the war then went out west and fought in several skirmishes in the Indian Wars. That's your trivia lesson for today. Remember it because you will be tested on it in exams during your next visit to the US. |

When I told my then young son that his several times great grandfather was in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo, he was rather chuffed and I had to buy him some Airfix figures to play with. A bit later, I told him that another ancestor was a convict on the First Fleet in 1788 (our equivalent of the Mayflower, but with shiploads of criminals). I can still remember his late face with puzzled eyes as he tried to work out what could possibly good in having a thief and mutineer for an ancestor. The ancestor did slightly redeem himself by marrying a woman called Mary Christmas. So there's your trivia lesson. |

I hate Fredericksburg…keep it at the Host… |

They said that Cold Wars 2017 was going to be at the host but after that I suspect all conventions will be in Fredericksburg. Based on what? The BOD has given no such indication. Given that the contract is good through 2017 (at least) and the future of the Host is settled (somewhat), I doubt they're that hot to move. |
