…what unit to make them? I've been looking at the nice decal sheets available from Brigade Games Miniatures and was considering making my soldiers either First Infantry Division or 35th Infantry Division. The reason for the former is that the First Infantry just seemed to be about everywhere. They were one of the first on the beaches during Operation Torch and of course were part of the D-Day landing and fought in Patton's Third Army all the way to Germany.

The appeal of the 35th is of course Kelly's Heroes 35th had an excellent run throughout the ETO.

Of course another option is to not give my models a distinctive unit patch. What are your thoughts?

28th Infantry Division.
Held the Bastogne Corridor for 4 days against 10 German divisions so the 101st could get there and hog all the glory.
And all this after the bloodbath in the Hurtgen Forest.
Just a simple ordinary division. No frills.

Very simple division patch. Red Keystone, the Bloody Buckets.

Ah the Bloody Buckets another good one and Lon carries that one as well. Yes I had recently read the 28th trials in Hurtgen and beyond. I think the Germans were the ones who game the division its name.

29th ID?

No love for the 2nd ID? That white star on a black shield is instantly recognizable.

Do the local boys. The 36th division fought in Italy and France, and was present in North Africa. I believe there were several other Texas divisions from the National Guard and Reserve.

Big Red One!! My Uncle Bud was with them all through Tunisia, Italy, and into France via Omaha Beach, then through France, Aachen, Hurtgen, and in the Bulge as well. He was wounded several times but made it through only to die in a car accident a few years later.

Yep going to go with the Big Red One. All the others are great as well but considering that I have 28 mm figures for North Africa as well as the ETO (8th Army and DAK and Late War Germans) going with the number one patch seems to be the way to get the most mileage. I noticed no one suggested going without the patches which I think says something as well about the pride we have in these units.

Great choice with the 1st but they were pretty much a 1st Army outfit, (Bradley in Normandy until 12th AG was activated) then under Courtney Hodges crossing the Rhine at Remagen, helping encircle the Ruhr and capture Paderborn. They did wind up in Czechoslovakia for VE Day. They saw as much combat as the other assault divisions from D-Day.

Placed my order for 1st Infantry Decals from Brigade Games as well as few other bits and bobs for my 28 mm WW II. Hopefully the decals will be here before I have a game to run on May 15th.
