Is anyone aware of what allied tanks and how many the Germans captured and put into use? I recall seeing some photos of Mark IVs in German service; how about French Tanks and British Whippets and Mark Vs? Thanks for your feedback. |

For German use of French tanks see: link |

I believe the majority in use were Mark IV, which also comprised the bulk of the German tank force. |

They only captured a dozen or so Whippets, and only a couple were still in running order, so they were taken for testing rather than employed in combat. As Martin says, the British Mark IV was essentially the standard German tank…. |

See the book "Hitler's Gladiator", a biography of Sepp Dietrich by Charles Messenger. Dietrich served in the fledgling German tank force during WW1 and the book (briefly) references some German tank-supported attacks (Cambrai in July 1918 and Valenciennes in Oct 1918). Interesting aside – Even after 1918, captured British tanks were still being employed in support of German Freikorps forces inside Germany in the crushing of the Red Bolshevik Spartacists. B |
