I am putting together the 4th Column for the allied army at Minden. This was commanded by General von Scheele (I've seen him listed as both a Major General and as a Lieutenant General) who commanded Hanoverian and one Hessian regiment. I want to include him but have not been able to find a picture of him, nor am I sure if he is Hanoverian or Hessian, or some other nationality so I can't even guess at a uniform. Thank you in advance for any help here, Terry Does anyone have any information on him and his possible uniform? Thanks, Terry |

I believe you're after Johann Daniel Victor von Scheele zu Schelenburg und Brunnenbrock, a Hannoverian Generalmajor at Minden, promoted to Generalleutnant in 1761. I'd assume his uniform to be typical of a Hannoverian general officer, or possibly that of 'his' infantry regiment – red, faced straw. |

Johann Daniel Victor von Scheele was awarded the rank of Generalmajor on the 29th of June 1759 just days before the Battle of Minden. As colonel of the Hannoverian Infantry regiment von Scheele his uniform would follow a similar colour pattern as the unit, but of a better quality and more silver lace. General officer uniforms were not regulated so these would follow the fashion of the time with the addition of gold or silver lace around the cuffs , coat lapels and hat and small clothes would most likely be straw colour. I have seen depictions of general officers wearing blue or black breeches, so I would imagine general officers did have a change of clothing while on campaign. There are paintings of Ferdinand of Brunswick wearing both a blue and red coat. |

GREAT! As I was hoping. I figured if I could confirm the nationality I could come up with an acceptable uniform. Thank you gentlemen! Terry |

timurilank has got it right according to my sources. The man was promoted general-major only days before the battle on 29 June. He was in fact second in command to the Hessian prince of Anhalt. The latter had assumed the command of "general of the day" and was busy commanding the joint army's piquets at Hahlen. @Terry37, Note all general officers and other gents attached to Ferdiand's staff had their sashes around their bellies – the Prussian way – instead of slung over the shoulder. This was regarded as a mark of distinction between regimental officers and those attached to the staff – or the generals in general (reads silly, I know :-). Christian, thanks for he additional info about the sashes. I'll keep that in mind when I select the figure for him. Terry |

Another question regarding this subject. I often see pictures of British generals who wore a sash around their waist under their uniform coat, and then another sash over their left shoulder. Would this be proper for a Hanoverian general as well? The waist sash being the yellow one and maybe the shoulder one in a shade of blue???? Thanks |

Terry37, Are you sure your believed "second" sash worn around the shoulder isn't more rightly the silk ribbon of some sort of Order. Such as the Order of St. Louis for the French marshals or the Pour le Mérite of some of the Prussian high born generals. The first came with blue silk, while the latter came with orange. And there are a many more found during this period. Cheers, Christian crogges7ywarmies.blogspot.com |

Hi Christian, I think you are very correct. The sash as I am calling it is very much as I expect a silk ribbon of some order. The rank sash is I believe from the feedback here the rank sash and for a Hanoverian general should be yellow. But if I use a figure(which I have one of) with the sash over the shoulder, what color do I paint it for a Hanoverian general? Thanks for helping me clarify my question. Terry |
