…Border With Russia.

"Western allies are preparing to put four battalions—a force of about 4,000 troops—in Poland and the Baltic countries as part of an effort by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to reinforce its border with Russia as Moscow steps up military activity, officials said Friday.

The U.S. is likely to provide two battalions, while Germany and Britain would likely provide a battalion each, according to Western officials.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, visiting Brussels, confirmed the overall size of the force and said the buildup was a response to more Russian activity around the Baltics—Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia—where tensions have been rising…"

I think 4 battalions would fall a bit short of 4,000 men.

Mako1130 Apr 2016 2:23 p.m. PST

That "many", huh?

cwlinsj30 Apr 2016 3:05 p.m. PST

4 battalions for the Baltics and Poland huh?

Underwhelming committment.

It was already determind that it would take at least 7 brigades just to keep the Russians from overruning the Baltics in 60 hours.

Sadly, we might see history repeated, again, in our lifetimes.

Mako1130 Apr 2016 3:51 p.m. PST

Last I read is they can take the Baltics in less than 48 hours.

Given all those rapid deployment exercises, it wouldn't surprise me at all. Someone just needs to say "go!".

darthfozzywig30 Apr 2016 4:12 p.m. PST

Tripwire force. They're not supposed to stop the Russians, they're supposed to die on camera, necessitating a national response. Ugh.

cwlinsj30 Apr 2016 4:23 p.m. PST

Or not, depending.

kyote,
the thing is, nobody started or expected a world war, let alone losing it. Yet it happened.

The problem is that old men posture themselves into a corner, then they place highly trained young men across from each other with weapons…

darthfozzywig is right on. They're not meant to be a sufficient force that would stop the Russians, but merely as a tripwire that would justify a greater military response.

It's more of a political move than a military one.

agrippavips30 Apr 2016 9:06 p.m. PST

soon to be 4 brigades, soon to be 4 divisions.

agrippavips30 Apr 2016 9:07 p.m. PST

Every time there is a flyover, a battalion gets added.

Mikasa01 May 2016 3:39 a.m. PST

Could we even deploy 4 brigades? Let alone divisions.

….and Tango's feeling on this post is?……

paulgenna01 May 2016 10:04 a.m. PST

The US does not 4 brigades to send over. It is time for the rest of NATO to start ponying up.

paulgenna01 May 2016 12:57 p.m. PST

Sorry, should read: the UA does not have 4 brigades to send over.

Mako1101 May 2016 1:44 p.m. PST

Wonder who'll get a platoon of tanks, next?

I suspect we might be able to deploy one soldier per "overflight", but not one brigade. We don't have that many of the latter.

Feelings…?… Anyone…

I'm guessing that RT and Steven Cohen will think it's an impending invasion given their past comments.

Is this in addition to the brigade the U.S. was talking about basing in the Baltic states?

Tango. Allow me to rephrase the question: As the original poster, what comments do you have regarding the post? Why was it noteworthy to you? Do you support or are against the action? If so, why?

Please do not post if you don't care to explain why we should even read your post if you do not explain why it is even mentioned?

When you post just "nice". we can all undstand that you are sharing a nice bit of hobby goodness. But when you simply repeat a headline from some source, it would be nice to know why (other than upping your word/post count).

Others have commented on the article, you still haven't.

That's what I meant by asking about how you "feel" about the subject YOU posted.

Depends how they are Task Organized. They wouldn't be pure Infantry or Tank Bns, etc., … They'd be cross attached, with possibly some FA, ADA, Log Support, etc. … I'd think.

Tango0102 May 2016 10:47 p.m. PST

As I have said many times… I comment or not when I want… to post a thread about ANY theme is not a rule condition to wrote a comment about it… not as I know (have to repass the rules).

If you are SO interesting in my opinion… send me a message and we can talk about it…

Take note that in other threads I post my opinion… in this one… not…

Thanks for your persistent interest.

Also there is a US 4200 man Armored Bde going also. Which again works out to my understanding of current TO&Es, etc. … A Bde is about 3-4 Bns + attachments.
