When I was reading comics in the 90s they ended up with 3 monthly Punisher books. He just isn't that interesting of a character. He is very good as an anti-hero appearing in other character's stories, specifically like Daredevil and Spider man.
And he can work on his own. I think with the rising crime rates from the 70s to 90s you had some call for vigilanteism of his level. That was something that drove his popularity and made it inevitable that he would get his own book after the mini series, which was very good.
The stories got stale pretty quick and all kind of nonsense went on in them by and by.
Now there is less crime, much less. You'd almost have to go out of your way to get mugged in New York these days it seems.
Heck in 2012 I think Lower Manhattan had the same number of murders as Ligonier, PA.
I know that the series is set in a different world and that the situation is different after the "incident" but that doesn't affect how much the viewer is desirous to see the different characters. I kind of wonder if it isn't one of the reasons that comic sales have plummeted since the 90s despite the phenomenal success of the comic book movies.
The reader just isn't as plugged in to the danger of crime at their level. Going into cities isn't as dangerous as it used to be. It is hardly dangerous at all.
Especially Manhattan. I know there are still places that are bad in NYC but nothing like it used to be and 2015 was one of the safest years in the city's modern history.
That being said they do have something with Daredevil. The Punisher's run in the 2nd season was great too. They did a much better job with his character than anyone else has on film to date.
So I'm looking forward to it. I knew nothing about Jessica Jones going into that and that ended up being excellent. Marvel has had some slightly not great things in the movie department but almost all of them have been very good at least.
