Did infantry buglers carry a rifle like the rest of the unit? Or,were they supposed to use off-tune notes to defend themselves? |

Buglers were mustered with the musicians and were supposed to be considered non=combatants, so no weapons or accouterments. That was one of the reasons that their uniforms had that "bird cage" piping on the front of the coat. FWIW, the US Army regulations that I have (1863,revised edition) notes that officers should also acquaint themselves with the bugle and be able to play any of the commands needed, if the situation required. |

If you mean Infantry Buglers (and I hope further that this means that you are thinking of adding them to your excellent line) then the answer is yes, most buglers did carry arms and fought (certainly post 1862). I would refer you here; link |

I have always assumed buglers carried a musket. Oddly enough I never thought about drummers. I keep thinking about that scene in "Glory" where the 54th's drummers were sent to the rear before the attack on Fort Wagner. |

Musicians were authorized a sword (a shorter version of what sergeants carried). I can't imagine them carrying a musket--they had more important things to do :) |

I cannot imagine any bugler carrying a rifle-musket and accouterments. He needed to be free to move quickly upon the orders of his battalion commander, and be available to the commander at a moment's notice. It's certainly appropriate for him to have his knapsack or blanket roll, and haversack and canteen. If he's issued one, then I can see him with a baldric and musician's sword. But otherwise, no weapon(s) and accouterments. |
