To follow on with the last post I have compleated the re-basing of my way old 28mm Late Roman infantry. I'm chuffed with the rebasing, it freshens the figures up no end, but as these were done many years ago, well before all of the fancy shield transfers came out I'm afraid some of the shield designs leave alot to be desired. More plucked chicken than Imperial Eagle!

They look great!
Are the different colored helmet combs just for wargamer unit identification or did they actually do this?

Not sure myself, I'm sure there are folks much more informed than me on here but I like em!

great! Impetus basing?

Sheepman196130 Apr 2016 4:41 a.m. PST

Yep, Impetus, I like the fact that you can 'pretty' the base up when you have this much space to play with, plus they seem easier to handle when moving the figures around.

Very nice looking units!
The author of the Osprey "Late Roman infantryman 236-565 AD" think that the crests were different colours to help unit identification. He mentions red, yellow, black and white.

Shield designs (among other things) look just fine to me and really do not need transfers. Cool….

You may consider that real Roman soldiers didn't have transfers either- the shields look great.

I really love these- kudos for the hand-painted shields and the named units!

Sheepman196101 May 2016 2:05 a.m. PST

Thanks for the reply guys, the only thing I would say about the shields is that thinking about it logically, all of the soldiers in a unit (or maybe even the Co) would presumabaly pay one good painter to do all of their shields to a relitively high standard. The guy makes money and the units shields look good. OR did they use some kind of template, what do you think?

Diocletian28401 May 2016 5:56 a.m. PST

They look excellent! It was a good choice to use Impetus basing and to identify the name of the unit on the base.

Yes re painting the shields- the standard might have been really high (having seen the Dura ones). On campaign some shields might have needed replacing so might not match the others, or might have older or variant designs.

Perhaps the regimental shield painter might do you a custom job, with extra "victories" or the Emperor's portrait, for a few denarii more…
