I'm asking everyone to take a guess, based on your own observations ( I've never seen anything like a 'scientific poll' on this topic but please post if you know of one). What proportion of the population in your country would you estimate are tabletop miniature wargamers? (a) 1 out of 100 (b) 1 out of 250 (c) 1 out of 500 (d) 1 out of 1,000 (e) 1 out of 1,500 (f) 1 out of 10,000 (g) 1 out of 100,000 (h) 1 out of ______________ |

g. So are you going to furnish the hard data to see which is right? If not, then what is the point of this poll? |

Just interested to hear what people think, I have no hard data, Rallynow. |

I'm going d or e – most secondary schools have 3 or 4 kids and GW need enough customers to keep them going. |

I'm guessing C or D, though very loosely, with the odd rare figure or two, and some sort of rules set, or two as well, e.g. Clix figures, Star Wars X-Wing or 32mm collectibles, D&D, Superheroes, etc., etc.. Probably more like E to F for true miniatures gamers, with minis they've painted, or historical/sci-fi/fantasy gamers using non-prepackaged box set rules and minis, at least here in the USA. |

In Atlantic County NJ where I live there are maybe 300 to 3000 or so as a top end figure – this includes scifi, RPG, etc. Last census was 275000 for the county. That puts us at anywhere from A to D. I personally know about 30, and have seen a hundred others in stores in the area. On the assumption of not having seen most of them I put the upper figure at 3 to 10 times the number I have seen. |

f. that puts the total gamer population at approximately 33k in the US. I'm including all historical miniatures gamers, as well as the W40K/WHFB gamers, SciFi gamers (i.e. X-Wing), various RPG'ers, etc. That number probably goes up by 10x if we include all the Xbox and Playstation gamers… just my guess-timate. |

Using five million as a rough total of the population of Scotland and one thousand as a reasonable headcount for visitors at Claymore which is, arguably, our biggest show then the answer would appear to be 1 in 5000. The population is actually about 5.3 million but some of the visitors will be coming north on the day from England but I reckon that almost everyone in the hobby in Scotland attends Claymore. This unscientific poll suggests the answer to be somewhere between (e) and (f) but nowhere near either. |

1 in 5,000 sounds about right to me. Perhaps 5 – 10X that, depending upon the local region. |

F: based on my experience. I have been able to find at least 1 any where I've lived. Doesn't mean we game, just know of the other. And I assume ACTIVE miniatures gamer |

My guess "g" was for historical gamers only. I sometimes forget that there are other genres which get thrown into the same pot. We have already had the discussion as to whether they should be lumped together or not. They shouldn't be. |

The hobby is not as rare as you are depicting it to be. If you include the categories of Historical, Fantasy and Science Fiction war gaming, then I would say that in the U.S. that it would at least one in a hundred. I live in Oklahoma, which is by no means a hot spot for the hobby, and even here I encounter more people who play miniature war games than you would think -- and I am a person who hasn't played at a hobby shop in almost two decades and has never played a game at a convention or tournament. |

Miniatures specifically? 1 in a 1000? If you include CCG's, board games and RPG's.. so "tabletop gamers" in general, maybe one in 50 to one in 100? |
vicmagpa1 | 29 Apr 2016 9:19 p.m. PST |
in the united states. we miniature gamers are a stark minority. in one of our club meetings. it was suggested 14,000 miniature gamers. 500,000 gamers of other sorts. it might be a cultural thing. maybe 1 in 100,000 might be right. has HMGS done any type of polling on this question? |

If wargaming means. Boardgames, GW ect. Then about 1:10 000 in Norway. If you mean historical wargaming then 1:1 million. Because I doubt there are more then 5 of us in Norway. |

In the heavily urbanized UK, I reckon 1:1000 is about right, based on similar calculations to JimDuncans based on show attendance. Which would make the UK population of figure gamers 60000 plus or minus a good degree of variance. Compared to one of my other hobbies where we have at most a couple of hundred participants in the entire country, that makes wargaming positively mainstream;) |
