It looks quite interesting but I'll refrain. I already have a few biographies of the great man and I doubt it will contain much new information that will find its way to the table. |

Only one I have of his is "Origins of the French Revolution" which is quite good. |

I'll have a look at it in the bookstore. My big question is who the hell is he? What are his credentials to write the book. Got about 30 books on Frederick so far. There's also a few danger signs in the review that make me skeptical. |

If you use "the internet " you can find out "who the hell" he is. Since he is a noted professor of that period and I would gather he has the credentials . As to the review , You do understand a review is written by someone other than the author ? So it reflects the opinions of the reviewer and who they write for and generally most of the words and sentences used are theirs not the books author .. |

I have just finished reading it. It is a "general" history of him and not a military history. You certainly would not refer to it to ascertain the order of battle for Kolin. It does provide a decent review of his political thoughts, his taste in art/literature/philosophy. Blanning does expend a fair amount ink on Frederick's alleged homosexuality – but basically admits there is no solid proof and goes on to assume that he was homosexual. So – I have some reservations on his findings. There are a few typos, incorrect dates etc. Certainly not the best biography of him, but it does provide some insight on his view of the world through art, literature and political philosophy. |

I have read most of it and agree with Amherst. Lots of info on Frederick and his love of music, etc. It is not a military history. But one must remember that Frederick lived almost three quarters of a century and ruled for 46 years, during which he was actually at war for about 10. He had an interesting life outside the military, and this book places a lot of emphasis on that. |
