I have just bought a copy of the Chain of Command rule set having decided I quite fancy doing some Spanish Civil War gaming. The rules have rekindled an interest in WW2 gaming. If I want to get a couple of armies together for a game what is the minimum I can get away with in terms of figures ?

A platoon plus support per side. So perhaps 45-50 figures a side? Plus a vehicle per side as well.

Check out this link below:

This has all you SCW information you would need to play CoC. There are platoon listing which will help you determine the amount of figures to get started. For starting out, focus on the basic platoon, before going hog wild into purchasing a lot of support options.

Further, on the TFL web page there is a "Special" which has a mini-campaign for the period. See link:

All well worth it.

Good luck!

The link below is to a complete list of forces to play CoC Espania. It gives you the base platoon, all the support options and any specific rules the force uses.

Enjoy your games and if you play the Republic remember No Pasaran! Of course if you play the Nationalists I hope all your troops get dysentry, your tanks are serviced by blind drunk chimps and your shells are filled with soap and iron filings! ;-)

Also, if you use 15mm figures, your figures will match the ground scale. How often do you see that in a game?

Just a pity that 15mm SCW ranges have a habit if disappearing. Peter Pig give you a good start, and QRF to fill gaps, but between SDD and The Late Queen, a lot of good stuff has quietly disappeared, while I'm not sure what No Pasaran Miniatures' status is these days.

Many thanks for all the advice.

I will certainly download the SCW supplement and probably print it as well (what else are work printers for)

I am toying with the idea of going for 28mm as I generally feel that where a game uses smaller numbers of figures then go up in scale as the cost is not too prohibitive. That said the prices of painted 28mm on EBay is pretty steep; just as well I enjoy painting figures.

The Empress figures look really nice but I might research the availability of vehicles at various scales.

As to sympathies I like to think that if I'd been a young man in 1936 id have joined the International Brigades. However the Guardia Civil do have those funky tricornes…

I would like to eventually do the SCW. I will definitely be doing it in 20mm with Minairons since they are the finest figures in any scale out there bar none.

Don't know about 1936 but in 1979 they were absolutely shiny.

You could do 3 or 4 small squads of 6 or so guys each to get started. Figure they've seen some attrition already.

Then build up from there.
