Looks like the F-35 and the F-18 Super Hornet (they're really not super) are getting a bit more competition, now that Saab has dropped out.

The latter company withdrew their Gripen offering, since they believe the fix is in for the F-35.

It will be interesting to see what transpires, especially since the F-35 won't be fully operational until 2022, or later, even though they're trying to claim one squadron will be "operational" later this year.

Not really sure how that works, when the software to fire the guns doesn't work, and won't be coded for several more years.

I read a headline that the radar issue has been identified. The problem was the radar would shut itself off, or not boot up, periodically.

I'd love to read the fine print, and weasel words that get used, if/when the F-35 does get "certified as operational" later this year. I suspect between now and then, the company lawyers will be burning the midnight oil on that little project.

My choice would be the Typhoon, but no one is asking me.

Perhaps they should.

I'm surprised the Rafael isn't in the running as well.

Why don't they just lease some Typhoons until the F35 is ready?

Note the date for the press release….

As of now, I'm pretty sure the Hornet is the only real competitor to the F-35…

On a related note, the French just won the sub contract for Oz's new sub(s).

That was a shocker, with them beating out the Germans and Japanese for the contract.

The F-35 should be disqualified, since it is non-op, and will be for quite some time (5 – 6+ years), no matter how much the manufacturer tries to spin the story to the contrary.
