I just finished rewatching season 5 – (I have to wait till next year to see season 6 on DVD!) I was wondering why so many people who get killed with bladed weapons need to be given a Coup de Grace by having their throats cut! They may have had multiple chest wounds and still be standing till the neck cut from the back. At least Jon Snow died from several abdominal stabs without a neck wound! Or am I just being too picky? |

When the FX guy placed the order for fake blood, he calculated in gallons, but the vendor thought it was liters, so they have about 4 times as much fake blood as they need. Got to use it somehow. |

You are looking for logic in a show that features dragons and ice zombies. And demon babies. |

Guess that is how we know Jon Snow is not really dead as he did not receive the Coup de Grace. |

SPOILER ALERT Ahem… forgetting Lady Stoneheart? Catelyn received the Coup de Grace. |

But Catelyn is undead and well and living among the Brothers without Banners … |

They're just being thorough. They want to make it as difficult as possible to bring someone back to life -- a very real concern in a world with zombies and magic and the like. |

It can take a long time to die from even multiple wounds, and the victim could possibly recover, much to the chagrin of your killers. A Coup de Grace is just to make sure that the recipient is really, most sincerely, dead. |

Zombies don't enter into it. Nobody down south is even aware of them. That's purely a Northern thing. For now. No. It's just making sure they're dead. |

Visual signal to the audience that the recipient is categorically FUBAR. The 'gallons/litres' gag reminded me of an exchange between two of the VFX specialists on the DVD commentary. They point out that they're often called upon to add additional blood to wounds and fight scenes… but they've never yet been asked to remove any. |

Ser Meryn Trant is quite dead. |

But Catelyn is undead and well and living among the Brothers without Banners … After considering that the TV series was apparently going to blow off that tangent, It occurred to me: why WOULD anyone bring back Catelyn Stark? She was well-past her "resurrect by" date, she had *SO MUCH* to live for, and she was such a great leadership asset *before* her brain turned to cat food. It just seemed mean. |

To be sure they are dead. Its hard to kill someone with edged weapons esp through armor. They can also linger (noisely). Its just the whole concept of coup degrace. Been around for a long time. TomT |

Well unless you stab the individual in the heart or through both lungs or his liver it going to take awhile for said individual to die. As Roderick has pointed out you got to stab the individual in the right spot otherwise they could take a very long time to die. Just like that old guy that Arya & the Hound came across. He was not going to die any time soon with that gut wound. Which is why the Hound stabbed him in the heart. So you cut the throat and they will bleed out real quick. At least this show knows that. I have seen a lot of ninja movies were the ninja throw one of their stars that goes in about a half inch into the chest and the guy who is wounded drops over dead. |
