My wife has been assisting me to organize some of my hobby spaces around the house, and in the process, many "lost" have been found! grin

And it began to sink in that, while I was happy with my hobby, I was acting as if I had an eternity to finish all of my various wargaming projects. Well, that's probably not true!

So I've decided to catalog all of my partially completed projects, and then narrow them down to nine active projects: three fantasy, three historical, three sci-fi. I think I will be even happier if I focus a bit more.

Good plan wish I could do that, I'm a too many irons in the fire kinda of gamer.

platypus01au25 Apr 2016 8:39 p.m. PST

A good idea.

Also, you may wish to appoint a "wargames executor" to ensure it is not just dumped into the skip because other half isn't aware of the value. I've done that with both my wargames and fishing gear.

Nothing like a good clean up to open the eyes to the numerous dead end projects lurking in boxes.

PrivateSnafu25 Apr 2016 8:43 p.m. PST

Seriously dude! I am with you.

I am giving serious consideration to selling off a lot of 15mm stuff. I love the scale but I'm having more trouble seeing it as I transition into the need for reading glasses.

I might commission some stuff so I can avoid feeling defeated.

bsrlee25 Apr 2016 8:45 p.m. PST

You are not dead, therefore you must be immortal, just like the rest of us.

Syr Hobbs Wargames25 Apr 2016 8:50 p.m. PST

I decided on five projects, problem I'm trying to convince myself the six projects I have are actually five.

Bill McHarg25 Apr 2016 9:03 p.m. PST

To paraphrase my brother the physicist, 6 = 5 for unusually large values of 5.

Silent Pool25 Apr 2016 9:16 p.m. PST

You're not Immortal?

Then who is the next in line of TMP succession? Does TMP have a shelf-life? How are you feeling these days?

Oh, Bill!

Been there bought the T-shirt. Sold off a ton and used it to pay painters. Never looked back.

I too was worrying about having too many ongoing projects and decided that once I'm gone, I don't care if the minis are melted down and sold for the metal value. Its all for my entertainment at the moment. Some things are being sold off as I have too many dead ends. Go big or sell off is my motto. Hopefully I can complete a few projects that have been put aside to be picked up later,

However I'd like my relatives to get something out of my estate so have been writing down each Army in a book with makers names and a rough idea if something is valuable and worth sticking on Ebay.

Mako1125 Apr 2016 11:09 p.m. PST

While that sounds like a good idea in theory, how do you really know for sure?

tkdguy26 Apr 2016 12:05 a.m. PST

At least you don't have to worry about anyone wanting to take your head. Quickenings tend to trash the whole place. wink

I've done that dozens of times Bill. It makes you feel really organised and then something interesting comes along and it gets forgotten – again and again and again …..

Stick to smaller scale stuff so you have storage space for many unfinished projects – it works for me.

New year's resolution was to clear out all the projects I'd never do, so have been busy on e-bay selling stuff. 6 boxes emptied, about another dozen to go.

I found boxes of figures bought 12+ years ago, and never used or even painted. Chances are I'd never paint or use them, best to flog them and use the funds, time and space for the projects I am actually engaged with.

I did this a few years ago. Any project that wasn't painted was sold off. I kept all my painted figures. It's still over a dozen projects and some need fleshing out but it feels more managable. I have started two projects since then Frostgrave and Toy Soldiers both which are 90% complete.

I've yet to bite the bullet – but the truth of the original post has impinged unpleasantly on me in recent times.

I should start a sort out – it's just something I'm really bad at.

Am I a project hoarder ? Well, I'm a wargamer and the two do often go hand in hand.

I agree…

My 15mm Modern stuff (and Bongolesia) hasn't been touched in going on two years, (since I did the last batch of tanks for a game I was going to run last summer that never happened)….

I've gotten sucked up into 28mm stuff…

whitphoto26 Apr 2016 5:22 a.m. PST

I've only been in the modeling side of the hobby for about 5 years now but I'm only actively working on 4 games at the moment. You could say 5 but I have purposely overlapped my Frostgrave and D&D miniatures so I'm not doing double work. My issue is I have six or so projects that I've bought things for but haven't started yet. I'm starting to get stuff that I don't think I'll have time for until 2018! I started to say 2017, then realized it's already 2016! Falling behind already…

Rrobbyrobot26 Apr 2016 5:31 a.m. PST

I know I'm not immortal. Had a heart attack some 7 years ago. But, I've gotta have enough toys around to enjoy my remaining time. And I'm really stubborn, so that could be awhile…
Besides, my son's a gamer. So I know my old gear will be well taken care of…

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP26 Apr 2016 5:45 a.m. PST

I got rid of all my other stuff in 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 28mm & 54mm and have stuck to three 40mm ranges, AWI, ACW, & Medieval. However, I have now begun a 4th range of 40mm FIW. Very satisfied and glad I did. I have also limited the amount of figures in each range that I am building. Everything has been working out well and I am not sad that I made the move. Sooner or later, everybody will reach the tipping point unless they have lots of money and endless room. I don't like thousands of unpainted figures laying around. Oh wait…I still have thousands of unpainted figures laying around! Oh, those are the ones that I'm selling.

Mako1126 Apr 2016 7:25 a.m. PST

Good for you, Rrobby.

Stick to your guns……..

I haven't finished my Warhammer project for almost two years. So I decided to buckle down and…start a totally different scale and era! The pile grows…

Yes ,definitely stick to 9. Or perhaps 10. yes certainly no more than 11. Or 12.

13 is a good number…maybe even twice that if you are afraid of the number 13.

Cheriton26 Apr 2016 12:16 p.m. PST

ensure it is not just dumped into the skip because other half isn't aware of the value.

Good point, also in the case of my spouse, who does have a reasonable grasp of the wargames' value, I have created lists of values, contacts for the gaming stuff.

For my library, I started a catalogue, sheets by period, several years ago in an Excel Workbook with typical bibliographic entries.

Point is, she is at least provided with information with which to work. Whoever is saddled with the responsibility deserves that much.

Cheers,

guinness

Discovering you are not immortal is the first step towards dying.

It follows the cartoon logic.

Just like not looking down stops Wheely Coyote from falling. So does belving you are immortal stop you from dying.

boy wundyr x26 Apr 2016 3:29 p.m. PST

I thought it worked the other way around, the hobby guaranteed the immortality…

And I think Mako has a point, you'll feel kind of silly in 2525 if you don't have anything left to paint.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP26 Apr 2016 8:04 p.m. PST

If I catalog it all I fear that would hasten my demise. I prefer to have a rough understanding of what I have and where it is stored. Exact knowledge could be dangerous.

Raynman Supporting Member of TMP26 Apr 2016 8:09 p.m. PST

What is this focus you speak of?

Brandlin27 Apr 2016 3:44 a.m. PST

My collection follows quantum positioning logic.

I can know WHERE something is OR HOW much of it is painted. I CANNOT know BOTH.

Great War Ace27 Apr 2016 9:44 a.m. PST

Bill, you ARE immortal. And the projects you've forgotten and rediscovered? A pin pricks amount compared with what you've forgotten elsewhere. Remembering those "projects" will make you forget (or more accurately, forgo) the ones you've collected here. Of course, the rub is that you have to leave here to get back to them.

Everything we do here is merely a shadow or type of what we really are involved in. I look on "mortality" is the substance of immortal dreams….
