Anybody still or thinking of starting a Balkan War project in 28mm? I am gearing towards designing some convention games this fall, early winter and spring. The game will be the first war and should be Turks versus Bulgarians and maybe a few Greeks. Putting together winter terrain for the game |

Wow, sounds nice. Who makes figures for the period in 28mm? |

I have Bulgarians, Greeks, Turks, Serbs, and Montenegrins in 15mm. Played with Lardies rules and had some good fun. Wish you well in doing this in 28mm! Mark |

We did a special issue covering the Balkans wars in an issue of Time Portal Passages. There was a list of battles that scenarios could be designed from. |

I have Bulgarians and Greeks from Tiger miniatures (via Recreational Conflict). In the future I also plan on purchasing some Turks as well. For the next several months, however, everything is on hold as life intervenes. |

Richard at recreationalconflict.com is a good man to deal with. I have Armies of the Balkan Wars 1912-13: The priming charge for the Great War (Men-at-Arms,Defeat in Detail: The Ottoman Army in the Balkans, 1912-1913,The Balkan Wars 1912-1913: Prelude to the First World War (Warfare and History), and The Balkan War 1912-1913 by Alexander Vachkov. They are some good sources on the battles and uniforms. Rudy, I am looking for more battle descriptions so your Time Portal intrigues me. Is it still available? I am organizing units in platoons. with 4 sections of 10 men each per platoon with 10 man type section of 10 men for the platoon commander and his aides so 5 maneuver elements per platoon for a total of 50 men. I will have 3 platoons per side. The Turks will have an additional section to represent them having more troops so they will have 6 maneuver elements with a total of 3 platoons. Cavalry scouts and recon will be 8 men for each side. Each side will have two mgs and 2 artillery batteries for flavor. I have based the figures individually and for ease of movement have 10 man skirmish stands. I am using my 28mm Spanish Civil War buildings and Rif War houses. I also will have several ox carts for supplies. I have some nasty looking trenches. The rules will be my own, one page skirmish type rules |

Next year I plan to add a platoon of Montenegrins, and two platoons of Serbs. I shall also add two batteries of Serb Art, two mgs and 8 Serb cav. I will use the new forces against the Turks and in the Second Balkan War use them against the Bulgarians. I already have several winter mats from Cigar Box and winter pines coming from 4Ground and a number of tree bases. Some leafless trees will be used to add color to the game. The games will be loosely based on history but the emphasis will be on the feel, look and simple rules that reward tactics and create the flavor. Ideally the games will be set up for 4 to 6 players. My friend Jim is providing Greeks. It would be nice if Tiger releases some Romanians

I'm thinking about Balkan Wars in 15mm (Eureka miniatures) – which set of TFL rules did you use PanMark? ITLSU? Im working on naval battles (1:2400) now but land battles next. Cheers Alan |

Here's one for the hive mind. What color were the gun carriages for the various combatants? None of my reference sources have suggested any colors. Tiger on its web site has a Bulgarian gun in purple, a Turkish gun in natural wood and a Greek gun in green. If I had to guess, for the Serbs, I would go Green. |

Good to see interest for the wars going strong (even if it is not at my preferred level of analysis). Some good books to have, especially for the Ottoman Operations, and the Greek Operations The Official Consice History of the Balkan Wars by the Greek General Staff History Directorate link This is the English abridged version of the multi-volume greek history of the war. Despite being abridged it is very detailed on Greek operations. Memorabilia of the Balkan Wars – Uniforms, Medals and Heirlooms from the Belligerent Armies of 1912-1913 link A handsome book, with the Mylonas uniform plates, partly on which the Osprey was based. Has more uniforms than the Osprey. The price online is problematic, but you can get it at the War Museum in Athens for about 30 Euros Ericksson, Defeat in Detail link Superlative book based on the Ottoman archives. De-facto the English history of the Ottoman war effort. A must have. Most of these books have very plain maps of battles. Me and Chris Pringle have been working on making Bloody Big Battles Scenarios of the major battles of the war. Even if you do not want to try out Grant Tactical scenarios, the maps can be useful for understanding the battles. These maps are more detailed based on the massive Austro-Hungarian map survey created in 1910. You can find all the scenarios at the BBB Yahoo Group, and all the Greek-Ottoman (Kirk Kilise was done only by Crhis so I did not double post it on my blog and the yahoo group) ones at link Enjoy the period and good gaming. |

I also have Greeks and Bulgarians from Tiger Miniatures and am interested in the Balkan Wars. There is a new company that is starting to make figures for WW1 in the Balkans. They have made Serbians and are soon to release Romanians. Rudy, I would also love to get a hold of the Time Portal Passage Issue if possible. Unfortunately I won't be at Nashcon this year. |

Well the goal of having this period ready to game by July 31st is still in sight. I have been painting Bulgarians and odds and ends of the Turks. Today it was put matte finish on 160 Turks and Bulgarians. Will spray em tomorrow with "dull coate". Priming washers for bases black and then will paint the undersides an id color so there will be sections of 15 or 10 men. The smaller sections will represent more experienced troops. If I can figure out how to post pictures I will put up completed units in the near future. Your cold and chilled reporter, Dashetal reporting from the Bulgarian front winter campaign outside Adrianople. No, no censors let go of that telegram…. |

Alan, Sorry. I work too bloody hard. I have not looked at this thread in awhile. I have gamed the Balkan Wars using Triumph of the Will. |
