Liked the movie but lets face it, charging down the street would be extremely dumb. It did look good in the movie though. |

The John Wayne figure was a 54mm one, to keep things in perspective, right? |

IIRC, the Rebs were hoping to catch the Union cavalry by surprise and it was only by a lucky chance that John Wayne's character figured things out and was able to prepare a defense. In that way, it makes sense to me that the Rebs would put all their chances into one all out charge. Plus, what would an ACW movie be without a Rebel charge? Beautiful set-up. I have a train and most of the figures to play this but I need more houses. |

John Wayne and John Ford's movie, The Horse Soldiers, was based on the novel, The Horse Soldiers by Harold Sinclair .. which was probably based on D.Brown's "Grierson's Raid." The raid into Mississippi was a highly successful part of Grant's Vicksburg campaign. Grierson's Raid link Newton Station link The novel:: link As a boy my grandmother told me how her grandmother's family hid their salt (a necessity then for reserving food) from the Yankees who were raiding near Newton & Meridian MS. |
