Hi, Am on the cusp of dipping my toes back into DA, initially with an Impetus based Norman army. After rummaging at Salute; Conquest, Foundry, Gripping Beast (saga) and Crusader (although not spotted at Salute) all look splendid and all seem about the same heft, both figure and mount. I'm hoping to have maximum variance so, I'm hoping I can combine manufacturers on one base. Being a bit of pedant for aesthetic considerations will this work for me? or do I need to do the "same army, but separate manufacturers on each base " approach, or maybe use a strategy of same manufacturers horses on a base and swap around the riders? thoughts and LFE appreciated…. |

You missed one – Perry Crusaders. After all, they are just Normans, right? I'm an aesthetic snob myself. I'd personally stick with Perry Crusaders. You get more than enough variations for an army. |

I like a good mix as nothing was standardised then. There are a load of 'dark ages' comparison photos here… link |

I have a Conquest plastics, Perry crusaders and Crusader's Byzantines all together and they mix fine of you don't look too close. Perry's have the finest features of the three. Conquest plastics are the biggest and bulkiest. Crusadar's are a smidge shorter (but it may be the proportions that are tricking my eye). I have some Gripping Beast Dark Ages Warriors and they mix fine with either the Perry or Conquest; I am not sure if they would accurately represent GB's metal ranges though in terms of height and bulk. |

I'd start with Conquest plastics. Foundry's newer Norman infantry go with these fine. Not their cavalry as they are mostly too small. Crusader Spanish make good allied cavalry, just give them kite shields and different horses. Suggest using the Conquest horses, but Copplestone and some Foundry types will also work. |
