"The U.S. Air Force's B-52 Stratofortresses on their first combat deployment to the Mideast since the 1991 Gulf war have conducted their initial airstrikes against ISIS, military officials said Wednesday.

"On Monday, this iconic platform conducted its first mission against an [ISIS] weapons storage facility in Qayyarah" in northwestern Iraq south of Mosul, said Army Col. Steve Warren, a spokesman in Baghdad for Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve.

Earlier this month, the B-52s, flying out of the al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, replaced B-1 Lancer bombers in the Air Force inventory for precision-guided bomb attacks against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and for close-air support missions for local forces. The B-1s returned to the U.S. for maintenance and upgrades…"

20 days before finally carrying out one strike.

Good thing we're steppping up the pace.

Showing off for Putin. Surely they could have made those strikes with lighter, more modern aircraft.

I agree. More of a spectacle than anything.

To use an apt analogy, utilizing a strategic bomber on insurgents is like shooting a fly with a bazooka.

Yep … spread the goodness … Let the Taliban get B-52'd too !

To use an apt analogy, utilizing a strategic bomber on insurgents is like shooting a fly with a bazooka.
Not really, this is not the Arclight strikes of Vietnam era. With each B.U.F.F. packing 13 tons of HE. Today each B-52 can carry, IIRC, 20 Cruise type Missiles which each can target a separate location, etc., …

And I'm not sure how many JDAMs they can pack, but I'm sure it's a large figure. Smart munitions is more effective because it is more accurate. It hits what you are trying to hit. In almost all situations.

You can't think in the concept of "fly swatting with a Buick". It's like on the ground. Using a TOW, AT-4, MBT 120mm main gun round to take out a Toyota Pick-Up mounting a DShK. May be considered a waste when an MG or GL could do. But your mission is to attrite the enemy and his assets. As many as you can, as fast as you can …

Seems like they should start testing out some of those newfangled, small diameter bombs.

Perhaps they are.

They're a lot less expensive, and should get the job done.

But a smaller "bomb" has a smaller blast radius … And chances are you are not just targeting one Toyota. But there is always a trade off. And of course Smart Ordinance is not "magic" … And IIRC, during Vietnam most of the bombs loaded on B-52s were 500 "lbs'ers". The next size down, IIRC is 250 lbs. … I don't know if 250s are even made anywhere ? Bombs don't kill directly like a bullet … they rely on blast radius.
