I painted these 28mm Romans for a customer. I used Aventine figures, the command set is also Aventine, and Warlord Games Scorpions. As there units will be depicting a Eastern Legion and will be fighting early Sassanid Persians i added arid fufts of grass and small stones to all the bases. The Legionaries carry the 3rd Century AD Legionary oval shield, which was introduced at that time. The legionaries wear a mix of scale and mail armour with greives and added armour to the sword arm. That's one lucky customer. Have some of those Roman infantry (with the added armour) to paint, good to have your example to follow. |

Some unusual helmets in that mix. Very nice. |

I think we're overly fascinated with the Scorpion as a crew-served weapon in the ancient world. Aside from being best used in a defensive position in a fort, how on earth would they be in the least efficacious on an open field? They don't seem to be able to really put out the amount of fire needed to really pin down an enemy and force them to limit their movement to only certain avenues. Can someone explain to me why we keep putting them on the table, aside from the rule of cool? |

I think Rule of Cool sums it up nicely |

Some scorpions were mounted on ox carts which makes them more mobile and also able to fire overhead. Nice transfers!:o) Steve. |
