Well, as far as reboots go the first magnificent seven was pretty good.

But yeah, can't beat the original

Probably not, but if we take it for what it is, which is a cowboy movie with lots of gunfire, then it will probably be pretty good. I think Washington is a good actor; I will see it.

nazrat20 Apr 2016 7:31 a.m. PST

Looks good to me! I like it when they make Westerns again. There used to be scads of them but now we just get one every now and then.

Winston Smith20 Apr 2016 7:54 a.m. PST

It won't be the same, but I do love an over the top Western.

Naz, we do get a lot of Westerns these day. They're called superhero movies.

JLA10520 Apr 2016 8:15 a.m. PST

Ugh. Can't top Brynner, Mcqueen, Bronson and Coburn et al. At least those guys could look convincing as killers. This lot looks like a bunch of punks.

Winston Smith20 Apr 2016 8:34 a.m. PST

Denzel is a lot hairier than Yul. I just thought I should mention that.

MarkRyan20 Apr 2016 8:46 a.m. PST

What's not to like? A Western. Granted it's a remake but it looks like it will be action packed. It might jumpstart the genre back into the movies. I'm looking forward to it.

Patrick R20 Apr 2016 8:49 a.m. PST

I'm sure people pitched this using words like "edgy" and "gritty" and "relevant to modern audiences".

And it depresses me so much I want to pitch my rebuttal with a meat-cleaver …

skippy000120 Apr 2016 8:50 a.m. PST

Should have been a steampunk version.

darthfozzywig20 Apr 2016 9:13 a.m. PST

As McWong points out, the "original" was already a remake. :)

They've got a good director (Training Day, et al), a good cast (Denzel, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Oofrio, Peter Sargaard), and a good writer (The Alamo, et al), so if the script is good, there's no reason why this won't work.

Although I'm sure the anti-diversity crew will cry about PC Hollywood putting a Native American in the Seven…

…and the diversity crew will cry that he's using a bow and arrow like a stereotypical Hollywood Indian. ;)

Hafen von Schlockenberg20 Apr 2016 9:14 a.m. PST

"The Wild,Wild West" may have killed Hollywood's taste for steampunk westerns.
This looks OK. I just wish Denzel would do some more Easy Rawlins.

I just miss the Mexican Bandits. They were Boss. Looks like the standard bunch of PC Caucasian villains.

Also, the Bandit Chief needs to be a scenery chewer like Eli Wallach. That man had CHARISMA,

Fine with the Native American on the team! Realistically, though, he should be armed with a Yellow Boy Henry Rifle all dolled up with Brass nails on the stock. He would not have been using a bow in this Period.

Lt Col Pedant20 Apr 2016 10:04 a.m. PST

"He would not have been using a bow…" Hey! This is Hollywoood.

cosmicbank20 Apr 2016 10:05 a.m. PST

No thank you.

Inkpaduta20 Apr 2016 10:28 a.m. PST

Just saw the trailer. I think I will pass.
I am not into the PC West. The Seven now include
a woman, African-American, Asian American, Native American
and an older American. Geez. Plus, they fight a Rich White Guy.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2016 10:30 a.m. PST

It's interesting that the diversity crowd feels like there needs to be a black guy to lead the group, but then fails completely on the fact that the original features lots and lots of hispanic actors and the story revolved around poor Mexican farmers who were caught up in the mess Mexico was after the Mexican American war.

The original writers took The Seven Samurai and fit it plausibly into the history of the Wild West period, even if it was a silly story about bad men with hearts of gold doing 'the right thing.' There was heart and plausibility, and the hero Mexican shooter who came from a village like that and tried to deny himself, and the hero who the kids looked up to who told them the meaning of real courage to stay and do the hard farming rather than take easy money to be a gunfighter.

Now we have Denzel Washington (a fine actor, and I honestly have no issue with him being cast, or any black actors being in this movie- I just don't like the issue I point out below) and a bunch of good looking white guys (and one native american) saving a town of white folks from other white folks because…why? And they even added a gatling gun, because machine guns and explosions and such.

It's like someone described the Magnificent Seven to someone based on seeing it once when they were drunk and then coming up with a plot. It feels contrived and forced and a waste of the talented actors that are there. And then ironically casting a black guy to look like they are adding diversity and then taking away the amazing amount of diversity featured in the 'original' film by basically omitting all the hispanic people that were the heart of the original film.

Wow.

athun2520 Apr 2016 10:46 a.m. PST

Like the Ocean's 11 remake and it's spawn, we probably will end up with the Magnificent 7, 8, 9 …..until they bleed the franchise dry.

I can see it now--"The Magnificent 42!"

They made that Western.

It starred a 25 year old Raquel Welch….

Just the actual Old West did! CRAZY!!!

But no hispanics, apparently. That's what rubs me the wrong way.

Have to say, I'm not sure about this, but the music may have sold it to me.

Inkpaduta20 Apr 2016 1:56 p.m. PST

Yes, Darth I agree all those various groups were in the Old West. But, PC, makes them all equal, all empowered and all challenging the evil white elite. Frankly, THAT was not happening. None of these groups were intermixing quite that way.Nor would they be so accepting or be accepted. But hey, I am sure one of them will also be gay so let's just make the Old West a progressive Utopia of tolerance and inclusiveness!

bsrlee20 Apr 2016 2:06 p.m. PST

So, everyone missed 'The Hateful Eight'???

sneakgun20 Apr 2016 2:31 p.m. PST

I agree with McWong…..but cannon and a gatling….what's not to like, just don't compare to the others…..

darthfozzywig20 Apr 2016 2:52 p.m. PST

Yes, Darth I agree all those various groups were in the Old West. But, PC, makes them all equal, all empowered and all challenging the evil white elite. Frankly, THAT was not happening.

Right. What's your point? That the "original" was historically accurate? It was a fantasy.

And in the American version/remake, the PC crew got rid of those yellow people and made them white heroes fighting evil Mexicans.

None of these groups were intermixing quite that way.

See "what fantasy movie are you watching?" above.

Nor would they be so accepting or be accepted.

You've read the script? Do tell!

But hey, I am sure one of them will also be gay so let's just make the Old West a progressive Utopia of tolerance and inclusiveness!

Must be tough to feel put out over a movie you haven't seen yet.

RavenscraftCybernetics20 Apr 2016 3:11 p.m. PST

Pass, unless Tom Cruise dies a horrible death in it.

boy wundyr x20 Apr 2016 3:24 p.m. PST

Seven Samurai is probably the best movie I've ever seen (and one of my favourites), and I'd always placed the Magnificent Seven a fair bit below that as a remake, but I watched it again last year for the first time in maybe 15-20 years, and damn, it's pretty good with a lot more happening under the radar than I gave it credit for.

TGerritsen nails a lot of things that work for me in it, plus you have the laid back cool of Brynner, McQueen, Bronson and Coburn working overtime. I just don't see any group of other actors being able to capture that, I struggle to see one being able to capture it, never mind most of the cast. And no one can be Eli Wallach…

The Gatling gun almost makes me think they're trying to merge Mag. Seven with Wild Bunch…

kallman20 Apr 2016 4:54 p.m. PST

Oh yes I will see this. I'm with Nazrat the Western is ripe for a resurgence. It is a classic American icon that is ready for a fresh interpretation. And here is the real kicker Westerns should be fairly affordable to make compared to heavy CGI special effects films. Like the original Seven Samurai and Yo Jimbo these two seminal stories have seen a number of interpretations and successfully copied into other cultures and eras. The production values look amazing and a fantastic cast to boot.

kallman20 Apr 2016 5:01 p.m. PST

Fine with the Native American on the team! Realistically, though, he should be armed with a Yellow Boy Henry Rifle all dolled up with Brass nails on the stock. He would not have been using a bow in this Period.

Actually the Indian tribes still used bows as well as rifles (often supplied to them by the reservations) in fact there were plenty of dead cavalrymen at the Battle of the Little Big Horn with multiple arrow wounds. For one thing the bow was quiet, accurate and you did not need to worry about dry powder or lack of ammunition.

Dynaman878920 Apr 2016 5:51 p.m. PST

> we probably will end up with the Magnificent 7, 8, 9 …..until they bleed the franchise dry.

Which is exactly what happened to the original, the sequels to that were as bad as the sequels to Planet of the Apes.

Winston Smith20 Apr 2016 5:58 p.m. PST

I kind of feel sorry for the "team" behind this movie.
Here they are, bringing out a WESTERN, for crying out loud. A WESTERN!!!

And the first thing the mob with torches and pitchforks start whining about is that it has a very good African American actor playing the part of a bald Balkan actor.
Then the second round sneerers start breaking down the cast by ethnicity. Ok. Check off the Ethnic Identity list.
Finally, the backfire round is that they left someone out.
It's a full circle.

Dammit, I want a WESTERN!!! And this looks good. When is the last western we had? Not some asinine Quentin Tarrantino rubbish.

Hollywood follows this. Someone takes a risk on bringing back "the kind of movie they don't make anymore." And the stock on the mud sneerers stay away.
You can throw my argument back in my face by mentioning Mel Gibson, whose crap deserved to fail.

And this is condemned by dudes who have only seen a trailer, and never even heard of it until this morning.
No wonder all we get is "romantic comedies" and superhero movies.

I am just happy that wargamers have absolutely no say in which movies get made.

vtsaogames20 Apr 2016 6:47 p.m. PST

Not some asinine Quentin Tarrantino rubbish.

Hear, hear!

They do seem to have heavier ordnance. Will the remake of this feature tanks?

Winston Smith20 Apr 2016 7:05 p.m. PST

One can only hope!
If it were a Turtledovian movie universe, they would be called "barrels".

stephen phillip20 Apr 2016 7:20 p.m. PST

Why a remake? Is there no script writers with orignal ideas left? Terry Johnstone wrote a series of wondeful books, titus bass series and another series on the indian wars. Either series would be ideal film material

darthfozzywig20 Apr 2016 7:28 p.m. PST

Why a remake?

For the same reasons every other remake has been made, which has been happening since the early days of Hollywood. Remakes are not a recent phenomenon.

stephen phillip20 Apr 2016 7:44 p.m. PST

Know this, seen enough remakes over the years, some good, some bad, and some indifferent. The point is theres some really good books both fictional and nonfictional that would be the bases for a good original movie without rehasing some old tired storyline

JSchutt21 Apr 2016 3:15 a.m. PST

The constant parade of arrogant rich dudes/corporations in the bad guy role is getting tedious.

The end of a parade of "bad guys" that used to include nazis, communists, South American dictators, governments gone amok and mad scientists. Ironic that the actors playing these role fit the glove quite well…but don't actually realize it.

Vigilant21 Apr 2016 3:23 a.m. PST

I'm with Stephen Phillip, hence my original post. I love westerns, grew up watching them on TV, visited historic sites over the years on my holidays in the US. The point is why remake something when there are plenty of good stories out there. Get Denzil to star in the story of the African-American US Marshal from the period. By the way why do we have African-Americans, Native-Americans but not European-Americans?

Major Mike21 Apr 2016 3:58 a.m. PST

I think I'll just rewatch Deadwood or Hell on Wheels

Zyphyr21 Apr 2016 4:48 a.m. PST

Considering the vast number of remakes and homages that have been done over the years, this neither surprises or excites me.
