I was doing a little cataloging the other night, in order to see how many 1/100th (15mm – 18mm) scale Sci-Fi factions I have, and to try to remember which ones. It's been a while since I looked at them, since most are unpainted, and many were purchased years ago.

I know there are a decent number of them, but couldn't recall a lot, due to all the variety, from various manufacturers. Some stood out more, since I've got a platoon, or even in some cases, a full company of them at 1:1 ratio.

I'm still not done, but have a rough idea of how many I have, and was a bit surprised by the number.

So, thought I'd ask others to chime here as well, to see how many you all have too, that you use, plan to use for your Sci-Fi battles and skirmishes, or just own?

To count, my definition of a "faction" is at least one squad or more of 5 – 6 plus figures of the same type (usually, my squads/factions consist of 8 – 12+ personnel, or aliens; in some cases, 30 – 40 figs, and in a few, 120+ figs of the same faction). Doesn't have to be a hard and fast rule, if you use only 4 or less, but I'd generally categorize those as a fire-team.

For some categories, I group them roughly together, e.g. human adventurers, though if a ship's crew, or freighter crew, I'd count the latter two separately. Same goes for police, robots, humans in vacc suits by type (heavy is one, and light vacc suits are another, and both are different that civilians/soldiers/aliens not in vacc suits), human Planetary Defense Forces (PDF), etc., etc. UNSC Hardsuits, and Light Troopers count as two "factions", since they look a bit different.

Note – if you plan to use modern, or older human figures as opponents, you can include them in the listing here too (I'm using Cold War era Bundeswehr troops for my Planetary Defense Force, since they're low tech relative to more futuristic societies, but look good, and have a nice rocket-propelled A/T weapon). Also, if you've got a full company of 3 – 5 platoons of figures (same goes for multiple squads in a platoon), of the same type/race/species, those only count as one faction, generally, so please don't over-count them.

0. Zero forces in 1/100th for Sci-Fi
1. 1 – 5 different factions
2. 6 – 10 factions
3. 11 – 15 factions
4. 16 – 20
5. 21 – 25
6. 26 – 40
7. 41 – 60
8. 61 – 80
9. 81 – 100
10. 101+

Looking forward to seeing the results.

I'm a 6, I think, since it appears I have about 35 – 40 different factions, which I found to be a bit surprising the number was that high.

I have Soviet BT tanks and an I-153, plus needed infantry. How many factions is that to put against Turtledove's Lizards?

1. I have 4 factions each of about a platoon with vehicular support

arngrimson18 Apr 2016 5:49 a.m. PST

I think I'm at least a 5, but two of my forces are over 300 figures plus 20+ vehicles, four forces are over 100 figures, and most of the rest are 50+ strong. All 15mm/ 1/100th sci-fi miniatures from TTG/15mm.co.uk, TheIonAge.com, GZG.com, MRM, and some others I can't recall off hand at the mo'.

I too stopped counting at 22, as there was still a lot left to dig through and my office is already such a mess…

7. A whopping 25 of my factions come from my latest project, 15mm skirmish in the SFU!

OK, painted would come out to twelve right now and another twenty plus awaiting. These would be forces sized for Hammer's Slammers: The Crucible.Like The Captain said, I have so much painting to do.

I think I am a 4 16 to 20. To many of them unpainted off course.

Mute Bystander18 Apr 2016 8:28 a.m. PST

When I get home I shall count. Most of my SF factions are legacy 25mm stuff…

comstarhpg18 Apr 2016 9:05 a.m. PST

I'm a 6 between 35 and 40. About 25 built and painted rest in the mountain!
Purchased enough at Salute to finish two more factions off oh the mountain gets bigger.

Cheers Matt
