I have two small evenly matched armies in 15mm that I picked up on ebay but no idea on suitable rules. I've done some searching on TMP but the rulesets recommended seem to be for much larger armies than I have (and I'm reluctant to expand as this is a side period for me). A DBA type game would suit I reckon. Any ideas? Homegrown sets people are prepared to share for example. My army sizes are: Japanese – 18 bases inf, 9 cav, 5 generals, 6 guns, 1 MG Russian – 18 bases inf, 8 cav, 3 generals, 8 guns Thanks! |

From what I know they seem to have fought across prepared positions as a precursor to what we would see in WW1 some 10 years later or so. Apparently foreign observers did their jobs well. Russian morale was somewhat fragile. ….so rules with trenches, light artillery and some cavalry and lots of running away. Early WW1 rules I would think. There will be those with more expertise weighing in than I I'm sure. I do own a Japanese infantry cap and the bolt action rifle they used as historical artifacts of the conflict. Good luck! |

If you want to pop me an email at runequester@gmail.com, I'll shoot you a free copy of Trench Storm. It works for the scale you describe but I've never tested it for Russo-Japanese War, so I'd feel bad asking you to buy it if it won't work. If you like it, you can paypal me at some later point. |

Try Square Bashing from Peter Pig Miniatures. |

volley and bayonet would work for that. |

We use Greg Novak's Over the Top. OOP, yes, but there are still copies floating around the distribution chain. |

"Fields of Honor" might work. I use them for the 2nd Boer War. Been thinking about using them for 1914. |

I am a big BBB aficionado, and you should give it a try, but fairness demands I point out that you can also try something with Black Powder. There is also Contemptible Little Armies. |

With the forces you have I would suggest either a DBX type set or Blitzkrieg Commander. This would allow you to use individual bases as units – companies and batteries. Alternatively a Warmaster variant, I think there is a WW1 version somewhere, with 3 bases per unit I'm assuming everything is on the same size base To be honest the forces are a bit skewed towards cavalry and artillery. You have enough artillery to do a complete 1:1 battery for both sides I know you don't want to expand the forces but it might be worth getting some more infantry, say 24 bases per side, and a HMG for the Russians Alan |

Your armies will make 4.5 battalions each for Square Bashing. You would need more infantry. |

Yes, you haven't got enough infantry for either Square Bashing or Great War Spearhead (approx four battalions worth, where really you need at least a division). You do have enough for a battalion in Over the Top though. The is a WW1 variant of Hordes of the Things, and Pz * has a WW1 set with battalions as the basic element. The Neil Thomas One Hour 'machine age' rules work fine for early WW1 and RJW, you could always try those. |

Gentlemen – I really am most grateful to you for giving me so much helpful info and your valuable time. How nice the wargaming fraternity is! There's a lot of leads amongst that lot so plenty for me to start researching. And yes, I thought the arty was a bit top heavy too so perhaps an extra bag of infantry or two might be required. I think the figures were Old Glory – very cleanly cut, look lovely :)) |

Chris BBB2 - I'm trying to find my BBB rule set. I bought that and the scenarios supplement when you first published them but the former has gone walkabout. Hence not played them yet but tweaked the scenarios for 2 FPW games (photocopied before book went missing) and they provided excellent entertainment! If I was in UK or US where the BBB community seems to be vibrant then I'm sure I'd be playing them all the time. |

Justin, sorry to hear your BBB book has gone astray! I hope it turns up. Whereabouts in China are you, and what's the wargaming scene like there? Good luck with finding a ruleset you like for your RJW armies, and with finding a like-minded friend to play against. Happy gaming! Chris |

Doesn't HFG, the DBx Horse Foot guns have draft army lists for Russo-Japanese war? David F Brown |

Warring Empires might do the trick -I believe it was written by the same chap as BBB but less "Big"… |

I use Battles for Empire. I wrote a RJW supplement for those rules that I can send you if you contact me with your e-mail. It includes mines, searchlights, barbed wire, etc. In those rules, as well as GWSH, Square Bashing, 1916 (War Times Journal), Over The Top and Black Powder, one stand is a company. In BBB one stand is approximately a battalion. CLA uses individually based figures. |
