The Legionaires holding the two smaller ruins managed to hold on…barely. In one case, only the captain and sergeant-major were left standing, the latter now a 'Gallant Legionaire' after single-handedly dispatching four of the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. In the rules 'Sand and Blood,' any figures deemed a 'Gallant Legionaire' receive a +1 to their die roll in melee. Since this was the first game in a small campaign, this particular non-com figure will retain that designation going into the next game. I might give any section led by a Gallant Legionaire a bonus in morale. Have to think about it.

With the first three Arab tribes driven off, the game came down to the charge of the last Arab foot unit. Alas, it was not meant to be for the Sons of the Desert. As the Arab unit approached it was subjected to a withering fire from the main Legionary position. With the other tribes routed, the Legionaires were able to bring more rifles to bear on the last Arab unit. And what was worse, the unit failed it's 'to close' die roll and took point-blank rifle fire. Unable to stand up to the hail of lead, the last Arab unit fled back into the desert.
The two Legion companies suffered a combined 14 casualties out of 40 effectives but their survival meant that word would get back to the main Legion garrison and preparations could be made to deal with the uprising.
