My comrade in arms, Fusilier Dan and I are working on our own shiny toy soldier rules at present. We've been using his 42mm Spencer Smiths, but I hope to deploy my 30mm flats soon. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to send a Word doc of the latest version. This is the introduction to the introduction: "This game is intended as a simple game involving toy soldiers of the classic style. It isn't intended to be 'realistic' in any sense. Rather, it's the friendly collaboration of two wargamers of mature years, with getting on for a century of playing with small but lethal figurines between them. It is a relaxed and relaxing game, where enough depends on the turn of a card and the roll of a handful of dice to say that our disasters are pure chance, but enough cunning decision-making to claim our victories as acts of brilliant generalship." Wearing bell buckles isn't a requirement, yet what you're wearing needs to be just as tasteful, the definition of tasteful being relative of course. |

Nate, We've been going Thursday's but not everyone. I'll contact you on the next one. I had best get painting because we'll need more troops:-) |

Winston I thought a cravat was this season's neck wear. |

I've just taken a quick skim through the rules--clad in no neckwear whatsoever, I might add--and they look very good indeed. Thank you both! |

"I say, Dan! There seems to be a stark naked chap saying good things about our rules. Very eccentric. I approve of that!" |

'A Gentleman's War' is certainly a deliberate throwback, although I'm fairly certain that the card sequence is something that none of the actual pioneers used (but ought to, dammit). But it seems to be striking a chord among wargamers who are attracted to a game that deliberately isn't 'realistic', where the models are deliberately toy-like, and where being a gent is central to the game. I put the word out yesterday that I'd be happy to send out what amounts to less-than-Beta version of the battle rules, and I got thirty emails asking for them – mostly from veteran players, including ex GW sculptor Aly Morison, who makes 42mm figures of this type (sold by Spencer Smith) and offers to share photos. |

sounds great! email sent. Aly Morison sculpts are what got me inspired to do toy soldiers. Anybody that appreciates his work is a fine gent in my estimation. |
