Many of the clubs in England that I have visited will typically be centered on fantasy type games, usually games workshop. The only 'historical games avaialble tend to fall into either flames of war, warhammer ancient battle and possibly black powder or bolt action. It is very rare to find someone interested in older but classic games such as V&B, Crossfire, Piquet, Shako, or Armati. Problem is, these are exactly the types of game that I enjoy. Are there any clubs in England that are still regularly playing such games? |

I see you're in the Wiltshire area so Shedman's club is obviously a sound recommendation. But if you're ever in London (on a Thursday I believe) check out the Exiles, that play all manner of periods & with various rulesets. link Cheers, RC (Exile in exile) |

Sorry I should have added the correct location but I can't seem to change it on the membership. I am based in E. Anglia but E Midlands or London could be ok for weekend games. |

Outside your area, but Wyre Forest club, Kidderminster is pretty well all "historical" games. Black Powder, Battlegroup, FoG Ancients, Sword and Spear, AK47, Principles of War, Saga, Dux Bellorum, Twilight of the SunKing, Chain of Command, Lasalle, Blucher and Spearhead are just some of the games we have played over the past couple of years. |

Think your getting confused with the fantasy clubs and the wargames clubs, although there is a lot of crossover in most wargames clubs around the UK. Go to lancashiregames.com and there is a club section, depending where you are there may be a club there perhaps the Norwich club? |

Interesting how you all define and describe games in England. |

Northamptonshire has a choice of clubs many of which are historical and play some of the games you mention although 'older but classic' is not really the flavour locally ('original and innovative' being more popular with some 'shiny and full of pictures' being more popular with others) … Good luck – I am sure you will find somewhere. Thanks to RC (The Exiled Exile) for his plug for the Exiles here in London. Yes, we do play on Thursdays and FirstBrigade we would be happy for you to join one of our games if he ever in London on a Thursday evening. We would even buy you a drink or two as we game in a pub basement. As mentioned in the description of the Exiles, ‘We play a huge variety of periods using a wide variety of rule sets. Unusually we only run one game per session which everyone plays. This helps emphasise the social nature of the club.' Take a look at the past games section of our website to see all the periods we have played over the years along with the rules that we used for these games. Ezza |
