For those wondering what the border area terrain looked like or wanting to see what kind of paint jobs were on some us equipment, here is an old film that highlights the 2nd ACR up on the border during the Cold War. I apologize that it's a facebook link but I just saw it today.

Works for me. Good Cold War propaganda flick.

Yea, not available to me either, sadly.

That was really interesting and very helpful in regards to the terrain, thanks chaps.

The video didn't mention of "The Wall" in Nuremburg. . .?

That's where everybody I knew in 2 ACR went for recreation. . .

I'm not very good at linking but search on youtube for 'This is the Blackhorse (circa 1985)'. Contemporary for Team Yankee- lots of interesting info, period feel, and also and also shows the accurate colour scheme for 1985 USAREUR M1s……

Interesting film. Judging from the equipment it looks to be from about mid to late '60s. Saw a lot of OD tracks, M60A1s and scouts lugging M14s. And M114s (that unspeakable POS) but no TOWs (too early; those didn't show until 1970).

And here's the "This is the Blackhorse (circa 1985)" film that seneffe referenced:

Interesting to compare the equipment in each.

Thanks for sharing the links.

Watched the 2nd and 14th Cav one, and will need to watch the other one, later today.

I was thinking perhaps early 1960s for the video, given the Wehrmacht-style uniforms, helmets, and even footwear of the Bundesgrenschutz, and also the fact they're carrying/firing FN rifles.

It's interesting to see the US armor without stars on them (and/or blacked out). Will make finishing my minis up a bit easier, I suspect.

Anyone know if the yellow tactical markings are just for exercises, or if they'd be kept in combat, to denote platoons, and/or companies?

I saw diamonds and triangles on the M60A1s and M113s.

The name of the video I linked is "Border Watchers" part of the Army's "Big Picture" series of informative films.

Two very interesting films from two very different times it would seem to me. The one with the Blackhorse was interesting for me as I wonder if the helicopters would fly in so close a formation in times of war. Perhaps they did to maximise firepower, but they seemed very close together.

The earlier one was great for what I collect. M60s and M113s, It looked like they didn;t have the "integrated" air assets that the later Cavalry Rigiments did. If so I wonder when this change over happened.

Thanks Major Mike and others.

They started getting more helos in Europe in the mid-1970s, IIRC (post-Vietnam War), based upon some of the articles I've read about the border troops.

Prior to that, I suspect Vietnam had priority for them, especially given the high attrition rates for those there during the war.

There's excellent info on the USAREUR on-line, including some very in depth articles on equipment, how they patrolled, etc., etc., so worth checking out, if you want to know more about the Armored Cav along the inter-German border.
