Assuming you want to take the thing apart to its component parts for painting and detailing… what's the best way to accomplish this?

I've tried drilling out the rivets, just wondering if there's a better way?

I've heard drilling out, or grinding away the rivets.

Then regluing with an epoxy putty, afterwards.

Bill, if you were reading my blog you would find I do this all the time.

Use a Combined drill and countersink with your drill press.

I use a Desco #2 no. 40212. Bigger is better. I have a couple sizes but use the #2 the most often.

It cuts the rivet out easily.

I use foam core board to rest the Hot Wheels car on, so it does not get scrapped up on the table. You can also stack the foam core board to keep the model steady.

Then re-glue with 5 minute epoxy.

Mix the glue on a piece of aluminum foil with a large toothpick. Apply enough to fill the hole.

You can of course, use the combined drill and countersink with a regular drill, but it's much trickier. Even a Dremel tool will work.

An inexpensive drill press can be had from Sears or Harbor Freight Tools for about $100. USD I find mine was well worth the money.
