As I am currently laid up with a twisted knee I am binge-watching Beowulf.

It's not bad, but, is it me or is it a poor-man's Game of Thrones?

I tried to watch it, since I'm generally a fan of such shows, but for me it lacked the quality of "Vikings" or even the light-hearted fun of "Legend of the Seeker".

So for me it was a near-miss.

I started series recording – as there was also Deutschland 84 and War & Peace at the same time and then The 100 and Chronicles of Shannara (so just too much TV to keep up with) – but the machine missed a couple of episodes so I haven't bothered watching a partial series.

Saw the DVD on sale yesterday and thought it might be worth getting.

The little I saw made me think of the BBC's Merlin – is that a fair comparison ?

I am enjoying it.

Where did you find it on sale? The only place my google-fu can find it is in the UK.

I watched a few episodes on Time Warner prime time on demand channel. I like the critters and other CGI but I don't find myself yearning for more.

Started but lost interest.

Vikings and Lucifer are the two I'll make time to watch.

In FOPP, which is an entertainment shop – but yes, in the UK.

Amazon have it.

I missed that it was even on. I did not know it was a series.

I quite liked it.

I managed 2 episodes (which is more than most of my friends including the lead Actor's cousin!) I thought it was a total waste of a good idea. The bad guys looked like refugees from a boy band, not sure where the African tribe came from but I'm pretty sure they were not around northern Europe in the 5th/6th centuries. The CGI wasn't bad, but beyond that it had no redeeming features. Had they set it in a totally fantasy realm I might have had a better view, but to use Beowulf as a basis and then ignore the period it was set in was for me TV at its worst. Shan't be wasting my money on the DVD.

Like "Space Marines" they used "Beowulf" purely for name recognition. And like "Space Marines" that use created a lot of expectations that weren't met which hurt it's reception with the audience.

The setting is no more "Northern European" than GoT so I have no problems with having "Africans".
