I'm doing some training on Google Fu in my dojo, looking for different types of 28s… But I keep running into the same few companies or obscure lines that are meant to supplement a certain Gothic science fiction game.

So, I figured… TMP knows the score. What are some underrated or under exposed 28mm miniatures lines?

Denizen Miniatures -- actually 25mm
Ground Zero Games -- also 25mm

Cobalt 1 from Black Hat Miniatures (from their dealer Scale Creep in the US)

Balthazar Marduk09 Apr 2016 10:05 p.m. PST

Cobalt 1 is the retro line with the transparent dome helmets, right? That's a blast from the past… I remember looking at those when I first got the internet.

tnjrp09 Apr 2016 11:15 p.m. PST

They no longer come with transparent helmets, but yes, they originally did. They are nice minis but indeed a little retro.

As for some example of lines flying under the radar, there is Afterlife from Anvil Eight (which you may have run across when looking at those "supplemental" mini lines) and Urban War from Myriad Miniatures (formerly known as Urban Mammoth) that caters to those looking for roughly the same type of aesthetic as Warzone (which also might be a little left in the dark, but not strictly relevant to this thread since they are more at 32-35mm, as most modern lines tend to be). CP Models' scifi lines also may be a little under-appreciated, considering their affordability and quality, but I think they get more publicity than the aforementioned -- despite not having a tie-in game.

Micropanzer's Crovax aliens – currently, only available in 15mm, but I'm lobbying for these in 28mm – 32mm, to go with 25mm – 28mm figs, respectively, since I see these guys as being rather large and scary.

In 32mm, they'd also work with the Star Wars Clix range of minis too.

Sorry, tried getting a direct pic to post here, but no joy.

So, if you want to see these too, in the larger scale, and in some more dynamic, action poses, like walking, running, etc., send a note to Jason, at Micropanzer.

I love the Denizen figures, and think they should be better known. It seems unfortunate that they were made as slender, beautifully sculpted models during a period when grotesque comic-bookishness were the rage.

Dasher10 Apr 2016 9:48 a.m. PST

VOR from FASA.
Some brilliant concepts and sculpts, innovative, unique.
I still play it when I can.

Dragon Gunner10 Apr 2016 9:55 a.m. PST

Mad Robot is a build your own miniature company. You can buy various different heads, torsos, legs, arms and weapons.

Balthazar Marduk10 Apr 2016 10:55 a.m. PST

Vor's proportions can be a little bit off, but I remember it. We have a few figures still in the blisters that we bought back in the early 2000s.

Probably one of the first lines that tried for the post modern look

I'm fond of the 'Dick Garrison: Intergalactic Hero" line,
the TinMan Miniatures and Bronze Age Miniatures neo-Barsoomian lines,
and the Hydra Miniatures lines of Valkeeri, Galacteers & etc.
All those are fairly retro-SF though, so not to everyones taste.

For hard SF, The old Hobby Products 'Space Lords' lines available from Moonraker are aces.

I love Rebel Minis Battlesuits:

Their Valorans aren't too shabby neither…

Subtle hint coming….make the switch to 15mm !!!! No big box companies and it's where the cool kids gang out ;)

I like ground zero games 25mm although they lost several of their lines to eureka minis….still a lot left and daemonscape for vehicles.
