So I have been painting individually based 40k figures for a long time. I few months ago I started painting 28mm ACW. I took a break and came back to them the other day. I suddenly realized I didn't base my figures before I painted them. Not sure why on earth I did that, other than I knew I wasn't going to individually base them. In anticipation of the Black Powder rules coming out for ACW, I would like to get these Sash N Saber figures on bases. Not sure (i) what size base to use (how many to a base); and (ii), if more than one figure to a base, what is the "best" or "preferred" basing compound or mixture to cover the wood base and the metal base of the figure? I guess the least messy and easiest to paint without priming… Lastly, can you base these guys individually for Black Powder and use a group movement tray? Thanks. |

Most people seem to base 28mm figures 2 x 2 on 40mm square bases. And you don't need the specific ACW rules. Vanilla Black Powder actually works fine for ACW. |

HI multi basing 40mm by 40mm with 4 figures on each stand. Also you can bases them like GWS and uses a sabo bases to form units. |

There is no casualty removal in Black Powder so it doesn't really matter how you base your figures. The critical part is what frontage your unit is. This will differentiate between large, standard, small and tiny units. A common interpretation is to base 4 figures in a 2 x 2 formation on a 40mm square base. The number of bases then determines the size of the unit. A standard unit could be 6 bases i.e. 24 figures, a small unit 4 bases and a tiny unit 2 bases. As long as both sides are based the same way it will be fine. Skirmishers are often based in two's. Cavalry in two's on a 50mm square base. Check out what your playing buddies do. |

The answer to your last question is yes. |

I'd agree. I think 2x2 infantry look credible in column and make a good line with a right or left face. As for basing compound and mix, try to match your table or terrain mat. For temperate zone summer, I use a T-49 mat, and always just paint the base a dull green and dip it in flocking while still wet, but some people seem to get enormous satisfaction out of wood putty and static grass. But your troops, your table: what looks good to you. |

Everyone in my gaming group bases infantry 2 X 2 on 40mm square bases for Black Powder. However with the new Sharp Practice skirmish rules coming out, I will start some new forces from several periods and base them on 20mm squares and use movement trays when I want to play Black Powder. Best of both worlds. I too am eagerly awaiting the new ACW supplement for Black Powder. The core rules work just fine for ACW, but the new book will certainly add some period flavor. I like Old Glory miniatures and rejoined the Old Glory Army to get the deep discounts which unfortunately don't apply to Sash & Saber miniatures. As for "basing compound or mixture", I use spackle. Cheap, available at any hardware store and easy enough to work with. Paul |
