So, I've got the map from the latest MWwBG, I've marked off the games and traders that I MUST see/visit – and it's time to start working out the walking route to optimise time in venue (I jest….no I don't). But – it seems like I'm all alone in my excitement. Have we got blasé about "The UK Wargamers' Christmas" aka Salute ? It's only 8 sleeps away. And I've been good this year, so I am expecting a damn fine reward. |

I'm excited & I'm not even going! I live in Virginia, but when I see Salute is near I know Historicon is around the corner! I hope ya'll have a GREAT time! Peter board2deathterrain.com |

I think internet shopping has an impact. I haven't been in a dog's age and I used to never miss it. That said I may well go. |

Too far south for me – and too expensive. |

Wish I could go, but alas… JJ, I can't even get you to go to Historicon…….and it's in your home state! |

I was very excited, put together a modest Cold War game in 6mm, but whilst everyone is enjoying themselves at Salute, I shall be flying South for work! Tally Ho! |

20thmaine, I'm not that far off turning 50 and I've been excited about Salute for about the last month – so I feel like a big kid. Every night I adjust my shopping list and like you I've worked out my route or at least alternatives. I'm still deciding if I go left or right first as the are two traders I want to get to as quick as possible. I'm also picking up stuff for friends – all good fun. One year, before the queues started getting massive, I was in the first ten to get in. I zipped over to a far corner and it was about two hours before it felt crowded. I have no idea what time you'd need to get there these days to be in the first 100. Anybody know? |

I'm not going this year, only the 2nd time that I've missed in the last 30 odd years. Too many kickstarters & the internet have taken their toll, and the theme this year was a real let down. Most of my mates have taken a sabbatical too; I know of only one of my usual dirty dozen that is going. |

Shows are for the young, especially Salute, entry fee, parking and fuel, I'll be £30.00 GBP worse off. Then I'll have to elbow my way through other wargamers to get to goods after queuing, only to find they have sold out. I used to like shows but the internet killed 'em for me. Have fun at Salute it's a good show, it's just not me anymore. |

Excited about Salute? Nah, not really…just kidding, of course I am |

and the theme this year was a real let down There's a theme ? Checks Salute web site. Oh…Steam Punk. Hmm….that's intriguing as I thought the interest in that had waned over the last couple of years from a peak three or four years ago. Just my perception from going around the show. |

I think it's fair to day that, free figure aside (and the possibility of buying quite a nice teeshirt, should the mood take you) the theme is almost irrelevant. The Warlords, for example, are putting on three games, none of which have anything to do with the theme. There's the best part of 90 odd games, as I recall, on – of course – every gaming subject under the sun. Don't let it worry you! John T |

Not worried – Colonial Victorians on Mars in steam powered flying ships? What is there not to like in that?? |

Agreed – with my track record link - I obviously think that it's a fun idea. But you can't ever please everyone, no matter what's selected. Just saying that for those lucky enough to both be amongst the first 5000 through the door and not enchanted by the 'theme' it shouldn't impact overtly and will at least off the gamers something to put on ebay! Anyone interested in selling their VSF figure from Salute? |

Well, lets just saying that I am eyeing up some plus fours to wear ;) |

I have just noted that the London Marathon runners will not be collecting their race numbers and packs until next week. Whilst there will still be a couple of other shows on at ExCel, it should be a bit easier on the DLR and on the main concourse when you get there. |

@John Treadaway Don't want to make you feel old John – but I played that Cloudships of Mars game back at Salute 2005 or 2006 when I was 12 or so and absolutely loved it (and it kicked off a big love of wargaming!). Still need to get round to building my own cloudship one day… What happened to all the models from that game? |
John Treadaway | 15 Apr 2016 2:14 a.m. PST |
Ah yes – very true octachaz. We did it for those two years, last at Olympia and first at ExCel. The models? My four (an Aphid, two yankie conversions of martian skiffs and a Martian Hullcutter) all came with me (with my Martian Fort that we never got to use) when I moved three months ago (though the hullcutter took a hit and needs some repair work). The players that built them all kept theirs too. We have planned to do another game with the fort but need to raise the energy in our advanced years… Very glad you liked it and found it thought provoking. John T |
