Okay, so here's the thought experiment: You have to pick a single nation to play in every period they fought in. And it has to be a nation you don't already play (or play in at most 1 period). For me? France or Sweden probably. You? |

That is tough. I have lots of nations in lots of time periods. Maybe Spain? I only have them in one time period. |

And it has to be a nation you don't already play (or play in at most 1 period). Good lord, that's a challenge. I think all of my "one or none" nations have at least one historical conflict I'm not remotely interested in. I'd say Palmyra, but that would be cheating, so…Poland. |

I think maybe Spain. Might be interesting to do Spanish for both Italian wars and 30yw. Also mabye some medieval Spanish. And mabye Spanish naval of the 18th century. Oh and I'm already planning on ancient Spanish for my 2nd punic war project. |

The US and Europe from Spain to Russia are out, as is Japan. So I'm going China as well. Lots of periods, lots of enemies, lots of coll "what-ifs"… |

India. I've stayed away because the Raj depresses me. But the history goes way back, starts with the Indus valley and the Vedas, runs through the classical and medieval periods, includes conflicts with many interesting and challenging neighbors, and the mythic elements are excellent. Now I want an army of monkeys to fight an army of demons. |

Tough one. I was going to say Finland, but I only know a bit about their WWII experience. How far back do they go, and would it be interesting enough? Perhaps Rome as that would let me start on the Tiber and then finish on the Golden Horn, in the 15th century. Western Europeans call the Eastern Roman Empire "Byzantium", but they themselves maintained they were Roman. And what little I know of "Byzantine" history interests me enough that I've contemplated building an army for them (stymied by the fact that there is no interest in any scale of ancients locally). Also, "Byzantium" is the only nation I've ever started a "what-if" scenario for, and that was when a friend and I were playing pre-Dreadnought ironclad naval warfare. He, being an Anglophile, played things straight with the historical Royal Navy while I started designing a hypothetical 19th Century Byzantine navy that could actually challenge the British in the eastern Med. It did not get far, but I have the designs still should I want to start it up again. |

You could cheat a bit and do Finnish volunteers for the Imperial German army in ww1 and I imagine most wars that have involved russian troops have involved Finns as well :) |

While dirt has stayed relatively static since humans started scrabbling around, what (I think) constitutes a nation located in a specific spot doesn't. I don't really feel that most "nations" cover many periods. Different nations with some common (often retconned) history sometimes inhabit the same dirt. Or … Gaul ain't France; Russia ain't the Soviet Union ain't Russia (circa 1990) or Russia (tomorrow afternoon). Sometimes we even get a nation that inhabits different dirt than their reasonably legitimate ancestors. So, if we're looking at dirt, the events that have happened where Colombia is are fairly novel, very ungamed, and appear (from my decided lack of knowledge) to be potentially interesting nonetheless. Colombia. |

Instead of "nation", why not "geographical expression"? That's what I had in mind when I said Egypt. Start out with all kinds of chariots and then go with Ptolemy and phalanx. Go straight to Rome etc. fascinating Crusade era armies and then an Ottoman outpost. Not to be neglected in Colonial era and interesting tanky armies. I suppose I could be accused of cheating because I had an NKE army, generic phalanx and elephant armies, a Fatimid army and River War armies. However I have since sold them all off. |

The two that I only play in 1 period is Spain and Poland, though I would be interested to take them both through all periods. If it is one that I don't play at present – Romania would be cool. |

Grand Duchy of Fenwick. Can easily paint up their entire army in 1:1 scale. Plus the exact same figures are correct for any conflict from the Middle Ages through at least 1950 or so. Otherwise Norway. I assume that some of my farmer ancestors were likely drafted at some point in time. |
