"Just as the Iraqi government announced the beginning of the operations to liberate Mosul, the country's second largest city, Iraq's internal political turmoil threatens to reverse what has been achieved against ISIS. The Iraqi army launched an offensive 12 days ago to capture a group of villages south of Mosul. The battle of Mosul is being led by the Iraqi army's 15th and 16th divisions; both are newly formed and contain a majority of Shiite soldiers. While Sunni tribes, Kurdish forces and U.S. airstrikes are supporting the effort, the outcome will be determined by the effectiveness of the Iraqi armed forces. I'm under the impression that was cancelled, or failed already, since a US general said they might be ready to start/restart their attack on Mosul in December of this year. I've lost track. Seems like about the 4th or 5th restart already, and guess if the one in Dec. really happens, it'll be number six, or so……. Maybe the 10th time will be a charm. In addition to a political crisis in Baghdad, they seem to have a radical jihadi crisis there too, given the number of bombings in and around the city, of late. |

"What we really need is a Hot Tub Time Machine to dial the clock back to 2003 and stop the powers-that-be at the time from invading Iraq and deposing Saddam." Because a strong dictator in charge of a country did so well in Syria, Lybia, Egypt, etc. |

I was under the impression this is a Shiite problem, now…… I certainly hope the Persians step up their game. |

Perhaps the post invasion turmoil in Iraq acted in part as an accelerator for, amongst other things, the movements against various other regimes. If that hadn't occurred then the pace of change elsewhere may have been slower and less violent. |
