…Him Out of Danger? No, He'd Just Die. "In X-Men: Days of Future Past we get to see Quicksilver, a mutant who can move super fast. I've already looked at his speed, so let's look at a particular scene from the movie. SPOILER ALERT. Actually, this isn't much of a spoiler because this scene appears in the movie trailer, and the movie is a couple years old. Here's the deal. Quicksilver is with Magneto and they need to get past a bunch of guards in a hallway. To do this, Quicksilver runs down the hall super fast while pushing Magneto. Oh, he also holds the back of Magneto's head so that he won't get whiplash. Now for the analysis. What kind of acceleration would this require? Would Magneto have to worry about whiplash?…" Full text here TMP link Amicalement Armand |

Too much thought for a superhero movie. |

Maybe he doesn't actually accelerate but rather slows the rest of the universe. |

At some point the powers of some characters are so extreme they completely throw out our common perception of the laws of physics. Superman's hand can move so fast it would hit the atoms in the air between him and his target so fast they would generate massive gamma ray bursts and his fist actually hitting something at near the speed of light would have the impact equivalent of a hydrogen bomb. He could probably turn somebody into a messy goo by simply snapping his fingers in front of their face. Normally Quicksilver could kill anyone by giving them even a slight nudge to the head. On the other hand some superheroes like the Flash are not merely super-fast they have a whole background that explains how they can pick up a person at full speed and not instantly turn them into a red mist (the Speed Force) while others are not unusually fast, but can manipulate time in such a way they appear ludicrously fast and therefore avoid problems such as inertia and most laws of motion applied to extreme speeds. Also the biggest drawback to super-speed in real life would be bug splat, go fast enough and they hit like bullets … YouTube link |
