I've been enjoying looking at these paintings of ships by the famous French maritime artist Antoine Roux (born Marseilles, 1765) and thought others might enjoy these. Really beautiful work, and painted by a contemporary.

I was very happy to see his painting of a certain "corvette" "El Gambo" – presumably the El Gamo that Cochrane encountered in HMS Speedy.

Nice painting: but don't we all want our Gamo to be a lateen-rigged Xebec?

Gamo was a ship-rigged frigate with a xebec style hull.

Roux has a very fine eye and hand. His pencil and watercolors of marine subjects are just plain wonderful.
