"It's cold, and in our hair ruffles a fresh wind, as it is not uncommon in northern Algeria in winter. The VW bus we leave beside the road – an almost perfectly straight road, which we follow for hours – and are now on foot. The reason for our trip are conspicuous structures in the desert sand, which we have discovered from the car and we want to take a closer look. How nomad tents they do not look, there must be something else. When we are closer, we see the remains of a stone-built and existing building of several rooms. Sand covered large parts of it, and it is probably only a matter of time before the desert has swallowed this foreign body entirely. The building is not one of a kind, like the Algerians they build. This one was built by the French. And "French" means in this case: the Foreign Legion…"

Great stuff! Is there any history to these forts -- such as, were they ever attacked?

For me, THE FFL fort is Fort Leclerc, which is a little unfair to the Italians who actually built it. A bit of the history here:
