Hello, all, I've been at it again. For those with the stomach to see more, here is my next minor conversion. This one was inspired by an illustration in the Caliver book "Armies of the First Schleswig-Holstein War" of a German volunteer wearing a brown coat, gray trousers, and gray turned up hat (with black feather, of course). I took some artistic license and gave mine blue trousers for a bit more color. I always liked the blue/brown combination, and this would also make this unit fit with a setting in Mittel Europe (think Hungarian Revolt, Russon-Turkish, various Slavic/Balkan settings, etc), where the brown/blue combination is often found. As far as the figures, I started with Perry Iron Brigade Firing Line and Command. Many already had the turned up brim, but I modified a few that did not. I shaved off the badge/pin on the hat brim and I (once again) fabricated a feather out of lead foil (which I reinforced with J & B Quick Weld). The Perry Figs….
….as German Volunteers…

Thumps up. Good idea and very good execution. Why no flag? I dont have the osprey book, but are you sure that the brown colour was a uniform and not some random civilian cloth. So you could use fifferent colours, like here.

Thanks, gents, Decebalus, I'm putting these units together for a system I'm working on that will allow me to play 19thC in general, so I'm avoiding flags in units that would place them in a specific theater and time. And the irregular units in particular I want to be able to repurpose for other contexts. This particular uniform is more speculative (the example it is based upon does mention civilian dress), but it's unclear whether that reference means that there was no attempt at uniformity. I assumed that at least for representational purposes that there was (I'm a historical gamer in my DNA, so I'm not going full blowm imaginations). My other volunteer conversion, Bracklow's Sharpshooters, is a bit more colorful and does conform to the record, and I intend to do some of the other colorful legions snd volunteers of the era, eventually (right now, I'm basing the project on Schleswig Holstein Wars). When it cones to the regulars (right now, Danes and Prusdians), they conform to the record as much as possible. Thanks for the lead on the book! Best, Ed M |
