I watched Turn A Gundam. It was really different than all the other Gundam series I have watched. Indeed per se I would not call it a mecha show. It was more closely to something Hayato Miyazaki would make, indeed it reminded me of Last Exile the most. So its not good as a source of war-gaming scenarios as let us say the Universal Century Gundams.

That said it was a good series. It was humane, ended in a hopeful sound, and had some very beautiful music. I also think it is a fitting end to the Gundam eras. After all that cruelty and inhumanity (a lot of it associated with creator Tominos really bad bout of depression), and all the sacrifices of so many characters it was nice to see that all those deaths were not pointless and that at some point some of humanity will find a lasting form of peace(conflicts will exist it seems, just not war, which is fine with me). Maybe I can know watch the Zeta and Victory series (which seem to be bleak as hell).

(I really do not think Tomino will let any war story to be set after Turn A Gundam's timeline. I think all future war gundam series will either be UC, or set in the 10000 year period between UC and the CC).

I am also looking at Gundam Thunderbolt. If you want a more old-fashioned war series that one is pretty good and easy to get in.

I've heard good things about the "In the Pocket" series. Good in this case being very well written and realistic, sense, as opposed to happy, etc.

I'll have to give this a watch, once I finish the epic Space Battleship Yamato: 2199.

rvandusen after you watch all of Yamato 2199 be sure to watch the Comet Empire movie you won't regret it.

Also there'll be a second season I found that out recently.

Andrew: War in the Pocket is a masterpiece. Probably one of the best anti-war pieces of media I have seen. It is a very sad show without becoming bleak. I will not hide it brought me to tears, and probably made me a bit more of a pacifist. It really hit home how war is a beast that devours many times the best and the brightest and wastes humans energy in killing rather than something more constructive. And it does this without being preachy. Just creating a scenario that will make any conscientious human feel really bad.

MS 08TH Team is also a very good realistic Gundam series.

rvandusen and Captain Gideon: Yes, Yamato 2199 was a very good re-imagining of the original series. More diverse cast, more humanizing of the opposition, really great music and battles. The Comet Empire movie (Ark of something ) was also great. I did not know there is a second season coming up, but it makes sense and will probably be great.

Also either read the Gundam Origin manga, or watch the Movies based on it as they come out (first two are out). Another really great re-imagining.

Turn A was written by Happy Tomino and not sad Tomino, you can tell by the low death ratio of characters. It was also his atempt to bring all prior Gundam series into a single timeline suggesting there have been several world changing upheavals that's destroyed civilization and it's had to rebuild.

Now try and fit the last series he made for Gundam G Reko which many believe takes place possibly 1000 years after Turn A.

And we still have not even figured out how Iron Blooded Orphans would fit in now.

I hope you are reading the English version of Legend of the Galactic Heroes now that book 1 is out.

Hey Sargonarhes. Indeed!

My own belief is that G takes place before Turn A. I have read conflicting reports, but I prefer to use Turn A as the end period. Because it is a good end, and God knows all those characters deserve a book end that is not another depressing thing.

Considering that there are potentially 10000 years between Turn A and UC, Iron Blooded orphans can take place in any of that period. The Martian colonies probably indicate a post G Reconquista period.

That said I have no problem leaving the AU to their own periods. No need to put everything in the same story.

On LOGH. I read the fan translation. That said I bought it simply because it deserves to be fully translated.

Really looking forwards with interest to the re-imagining Production IG is doing.
